EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu , Nov 6: Back in Jammu, 67th Tree Talk was today held in RKS Girls Hr Sec School Bishnah where students, teachers, professors, forest officers, doctors, citizens, villagers gathered to greet the organizers. J P Sharma while welcoming students, citizens, media persons, scientists and subject experts outlined the need of getting sensitized to our environmental concerns , uniqueness of our natural heritage, knowing local names of plants and animals and discouraging harmful materials like plastics and carcinogenic chemicals. Yash Pal Sharma recalled his ten month old association with Tree Talk campaign which was launched on 19th December,2010 and mobilized all cross section of people to come together , share their eco-concerns and explore their roles and responsibilities in making environment clean and green. O P Sharma Vidyarthi while sharing outcome of ten month long tree talk said that during different travels to various places, it came to notice that clove tree ,Rudraksh tree are latest introductions in Jammu area but Dogra Kings had introduced such rare trees like Camphor, Khirni,Jiyopota,Champa, Panjtara to decorate parks and gardens. Introduction of Pistachio tree from Iran in Kashmir is reflection of love for trees in the minds of Dogra rulers. Jiyopota ghat reflects history as it was at that place that Maharaja Gulab Singh had his coronation ceremony under Jiyopota Tree on 17th June, 1822. Geeta Sharma while highlighting medicinal values of native herbs appealed students to create a herbal garden in their school and introduce herbs like Ashwagandha,Sarpgandha,Dhataki,Mulathi,Bala,Bakuchi,Pippli,Kandoori and use them for multiple benefits . Lalitsen Sharma focused on healing qualities of native trees like Sukhchain, Meddalakdi, Tejpat, Kapoor, Palash, Burans, Neem, Babool, Shami, Kanakchampa,Jiyopota and appealed students to gift plant saplings to nears and dears on the occasion of birthdays, marriage anniversary etc. Manjit Singh recited tree lyrics and girl students namely Jasleen, Kiranjot, Vanshika, Sonali, Neha, Meetu, Pratibha, Prayati Sharma shed light on role of students in mitigating woes of environment. President RKS Trust Ashok Dubey appreciated woodland walk and tree talk along canal side where medicinal,edible and decorative values of plants like Punarnava, Lasooda, Peepal, Palash,Jungli Kadamb,Reetha,Jiyopota,Bargad ,Sohanjana were discussed threadbare to inculcate love for trees and nature among students and citizens. Next Tree Talk is being organized in Company Bagh Amritsar,Punjab on 12th November afternoon ,focus will be on tree history and tree culture.
