DC Akhnoor concludes project on biodiversity conservation

Akhnoor, Nov 6: Govt. Degree College Akhnoor concluded World Wide Fund to Conserve Nature (WWF) sponsored project on the theme “Biodiversity Conservation” for the year 2010-11 here on Saturday.
As part of National Campaign on Environment Education (NEAC) of Ministry of Environment and Forests a series of awareness and action based programmes were organized in the college during the year 2010-11 especially in August and September this year.
In the awareness component various programmes including quiz/poster making/painting/model making/ speech competitions, rally, and public meeting were organized as well as pamphlet on Biodiversity were distributed among students and community whereas in action components, two waste management pits, one for biodegradable and other for non-biodegradable wastes were prepared besides establishing a botanical garden in the college.
On the concluding day an impressive function was organized in which prizes were distributed among the winners in different categories.
C.M. Seth, chairperson WWF-India, Jammu & Kashmir, was chief guest whereas K.C. Bhagat, retired professor/scientist SKUAST was guest of honour on the occasion.
Principal of college, Kaushal Smotra who presided over the function, welcomed the guests.
Niralpe Kour, Convenor of Environment Committee in College, introduced the audience about the programme. M. Ashaq Malik, Co-ordinator WWF project in college, presented the detailed report of the project.
Pooja Chaudhary, Student of B.Sc part II, conducted proceedings of program.
While speaking on the occasion, Seth appreciated the college to accomplish this project successfully. He said the college campus comprising of 340 kanals has a lot of potential and assured for further support to conserve the nature/environment locally in coming years. He underlined that the project will continue for next year under the theme “Protection of Forests” as part of United Nations declaration to year 2011 as “International Year of Forests”.
While interacting with students he said that our Education should be for sustainable development and encouraged their active involvement in conserving environment and saving life on planet.
Establishment of a nursery of wild plants and a green house in the college will be priority areas of next year project, he said.
Prizes and certificates of appreciation were distributed among winners. In poster cum painting competition Shreya Shrama, B.Sc Part I, won first whereas Ekta Kumari, B.Sc Part I and Bharti Sharma, B.Sc Part II won second and third prizes respectively. In speech competition Bandana Devi of B.Sc Part 2nd bagged first position whereas Bharti Sharma of B.Sc 2nd year and Chitter Lekha of B.A final year won second and third prizes respectively. The model prepared by Anu Bala, B.Sc Part II, Chitter Lekha, B.A Part III, and Ekta Kumari, B.Sc Part I chosen for 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes respectively. Team comprising of Bandana Devi and Shreeya Sharma of B.Sc Ist Year, Bharti Sharma and Manu Sharma of B.Sc 2nd Year,and Dulip Kumar of B.A 2nd Year won the quiz competition.
Rajni Bhagat, Yash Paul Sharma, Shivani Manchanda, Sanjay Kotwal, Neeru Sawhney and Sapna Sharma served judges for different competitions.
In the end, Kuldep Raj Sharma, Head, Department of Physics, presented vote of thanks. Later, the guests visited the Botanical garden.
A large number of students especially pursuing environmental and biological studies and staff members attended the function.
