Specialization has developed to such a degree that every n1ajor profession has produced a proliferation of specialization. Multiplicities or avenues are available and children are confused. For certain people, the decision is not much of a dilemma. But for the vast majority of educated youth, the dilemma is real and often terrifying. Occupational choice is a major form of decision making. In a modern industrial society, a person occupation is not just a way of living, but a way of life. In the era of 21st century of employment, everybody needs proper guidance and counseling for better adjustment in all walks of life. A large nun1ber or students are confused while deciding to choose their career due to pressure from parents, peer groups of friends and the urge to earn more and more is eminent among the youngsters. The need for career guidance and counseling is increasingly evident in the mass of data pointing to difficulties in career decision making, the underutilization of human resources, dissatisfaction with chosen career and such perennial problems such as the hardcore unemployed. Career guidance programmes are designed, in cooperation with progranl1nes of career education, to cope with such needs. Counselors should be aware of and utilize the pool of resources available to assist them in their career developl11ent activities. Whenever a person is aided directly or indirectly by another person in gaining knowledge, emotional fitness, mental activity or stability, social or civic adjustment or occupational efficiency and job satisfaction, guidance of one kind or the other is functioning. Programmes of career education are designed to prepare persons for the eventual selection or a career, but many adolescents and young adults will be unable to adequately cope with this critical decision making without the assistance of a professional counselor. Students must be helped to have a realistic selection of educational and vocational stream corresponding to one's innate potentialities ando vocation to enable one to save from failure and frustration. Hence, to provide job and education corresponding to one's potentialities is the prime aim and function of a counselor. Counselor should be aware of utilizing the pool of resources available to assist them in their career development activities. Career counseling can function at the, pre-entry level to assist the individual in realistically entering the work place as well as locating a first job commensurate, to the degree possible, with the client's interest and expectations. Counselor's role in providing placement services is not only to help the students in getting prepared, filling up the application form, preparing curiculum vitae and preparing for interviews but also to list the agencies that help in placement and also keep liaison with the employer to get the information about the types of job available with them, their requirements and emerging avenues of employment. Technological changes often causes decline in employment in some occupations and at the same time increase in others.If the career teacher is aware about the probable future growth or decline of the major industries and occupation in the employment market he can be more helpful to the students. No doubt counselor act as a task master acts as a motivator also. Counselor can assist clients in their initial adjustments to the demands of the workplace. Counselor work with their clients considering employment in jobs that are consistent with the overall abilities, vocational limitations, physical restrictions, general temperament, interest aptitude patterns, social skills, education, general qualification and other relevant characteristics and needs of clients. When appropriate, counselor appropriately trained in counselor development will assist in the placement of clients in position that arc consistent with the interest, culture, and the welfare of clients, employer and the public. The approach towards vocational selection should be as scientific as possible. Career placement and follow-up service are significant to the success of career counseling programmes. Remember, people with the Positive thinking become super achievers. These people work hard and better than others and earn and control 50% of world's resources. Choosing a career is undoubtly, a difficult piece of work However, the choice has to be made and the best use made or that choice. |
