Silence of political parties over "custodial" deaths is questionable

JAMMU, Nov 6: The silence of BJP and other political parties over the alleged custodial deaths in Jammu is questionable. Even after four days of the death of Vijay alias Lilli allegedly in police custody, no so-called pro-Jammu voice has so far uttered a single word on the issue.
Some local politicians may dismiss the issue as straws in the wind, but a popularity deficit, stemming from graft and handling of such matters with indifference, is likely to stare them in the face in future. If not taken seriously, it may cause the NC-Congress government and BJP an electoral erosion, and could strengthen independents.
Vijay belonged to a poor family. His father Puran Chand has a small piece of land to look after at Galvadechak. Elder brother Kuldeep drives the vehicle of a private hospital, while another brother Tarsem is a tailor.
He worked as a labourer, and also drove private and passenger vehicles to earn his livelihood. He died a mysterious death Wednesday last when his body was found in a field at Galvadechak. While family alleged he was killed in police custody, police claimed that he had already fled their custody.
On Thursday, when the dejected family members and relatives protested outside GMC hospital here and demanded justice and impartial probe into the incident, no political "big-wig" was moved by their plight. While they inconsolably sobbed in public, the "champions of the cause of Jammu" sat in their cozy government accomodations. They did not bother to even support the family's just and genuine demands of justice and probe. Even the village panchayat preferred to stay away from the issue, saying he was a drug addict.
It sounds strange, also because the otherwise publicity-hungary politicians hardly miss any such occasion to castigate the government. Majority politicians have developed the habit of making a mountain out of a molehill. They are often heard exaggerating minor issues.
So, their silence in this case, and at least half a dozen other such cases in the region, raises suspicion. This was the right time when they ought to raise their voice and ask the government to order probes into all such matters to bring the facts to light.
SP (rural) Rajesh Sharma is already enquiring into the matter. The Gajansoo police post incharge and four cops were placed under suspension after the protests.
