Last year's killings not Yusuf's death pain Omar | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 6: The Chief Minister does not feel guilty for handing National Conference worker, Haji Yusuf to Crime Branch where he breathed his last. Speaking at Tehelka magazines 'THINK' festival that was moderated by NDTV's Barkha Dutt, Omar said," I don't think I did anything wrong. Someone comes to me with allegations of corruption on him, I simply hand him over to the Police. Maybe the stress of returning more than Rs. 2 crore had stressed the fellow." Responding to a question, Omar said, "Yusuf death, last year's agitation and of course the years bygone have been the worst. I really wish we could have reduced the number of casualties. I will take the grief of last year to my grave. My secretary had a particular ring tone last year on his mobile, when I heard the same ring tone this year, I asked him to change it", Omar said. Omar also spoke about AFSPA revocation, Indus Water Treaty, development, elections and democracy. However, his comments on last year's agitation have been taken with a pinch of salt in Kashmir. People, by and large blame him for the killings. "When the first student got killed, Omar should have ordered a probe and ensured and end to such incidents. But the killings continued and when situation went out of control, Omar played a typical separatist. He even challenged the totality of accession", a student of Kashmir University said. The commoner on the street nurtures similar feelings. "We know how much pained he is over the plight of the people. He talks about AFSPA revocation endlessly but comes out openly to shield the erring police men and CRPF personnel who were involved in last year's killings. We know AFSPA does not apply to JK police." The people want action against the erring police personnel. This is the writing on the wall. Even his truth and reconciliatory commission has been rejected by most of the people. "It is another tool of conferring impunity to the erring men in uniform", said Khurran Parvez, a human rights activist. |
