NC secular formation & Congress hand-in-glove with it, says Kamaal | U-Turn For Power | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 7: NC additional general secretary and chief spokesperson Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal has finally realized that Congress, like the NC, is also secular and democratic. He hailed his own outfit and the Congress as secular and democratic formations yesterday while addressing delegates at the 37th annual general meeting of Voluntary Health Association of India (VHAI) in Srinagar. "Both the NC and the Congress have one thing in common and it is due to that both these parties enjoy the support of common masses. Secularism is the hallmark of both our party and the Congress. Our party leaders and those of Congress have been able to maintain the secular credentials. Both the NC and Congress leaders have worked hand-in-glove when it comes to maintaining the secular democratic credentials. Whosoever wants to create a rift among them can never be a true friend of the masses. Common masses should be vigilant about these people so that they are not taken for a ride and their interests are always safe," Kamaal reportedly said. He also said that "the NC always received support from the Congress leaders so that the state achieves progress and prosperity after 1947" and that the "NC leaders also played their part in the national movement and in the process many NC workers were either killed or jailed for raising revolt against British empire". What Kamaal said yesterday could be termed as a complete U-turn and the reasons are obvious. One of the reasons, of course, is the NC's insatiable lust for power and pelf. The owners of the NC have consistently compromised their stated positions for the sake of power. They did it in 1974-1975 and 1986-1987. And, they have been shifting stances since October 21, when the Chief Minister announced that he would withdraw the AFSPA from certain areas in the state. And, they do so with brazenly. Everyone knows what Kamaal said about the Congress and the JKPCC on October 25 and 26 and thereafter. He had abused, ridiculed and roundly condemned the Congress. What he had said had provoked the local Congress leadership to the extent that it virtually dismissed Kamaal as a "sick" man. It then appeared that the coalition was on the verge of collapse. Even the Congress national spokespersons had joined the local Congress leadership in taking on the custodians and owners of the NC. But today's Kamaal is a changed person who sees in the Congress only virtues and nothing but virtues and places on record his gratitude to the Congress for the service it has been rendering to the NC since 1947. Perhaps, he has suddenly come across some historical documents containing details on the services the Congress rendered to the NC from time to time. Who is Kamaal seeking to mislead and fool? The people of the state in general and Kashmir in particular are not that naive that they can't understand the intricacies of the kind of politics Kamaal has been indulging in for quite sometime now. They know that those who control the NC were, and are, committed to only one thing: power at whatever cost. Kamaal was not the only scion of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah who castigated the Congress and Congress leadership and changed his stance taking into consideration the power factor. The Chief Minister has also done the same. On October 21, he categorically stated that he would revoke the AFSPA before the Durbar move and a few days later he told a leading private news channel that what he had hinted at was his "intention and not decision". He changed his stance in no time believing that his insistence on revocation could lead to the fall of his government. One thing is more than clear: The NC wants to enjoy power for full six years. Will the local Congress leadership see through the NC game-plan and refashion its strategy to persuade the Congress high command to revive the 2002 power-sharing formula? Let's see what it finally does. If it relents, the Congress would suffer huge, huge losses and if it insists, persists and achieves what it wants then the Congress would sweep the polls, at least in Jammu province and Ladakh. |
