EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Nov 9: Two BJP MLAs were arrested in front of Civil Secretariat gate this morning and taken to City Police Stating for staging a protest in support of demands of farmers of the state on the opening day of Darbar in Winter Capital here .
Both the MLAS Ch. Sulhnandan representing the Marh Assembly Segment and Shyam Choudhary representing the Suchetgarh Assembly Constituency wearing a black apron as a mark of protest came to Secretariat gate and raised slogans in support of the farmers demands. They jostled with security men and police deployed outside the Secretariat gate in their bid to make an entry inside.
Both of them were later arrested by Police and taken to City Police Station where after lodging them for one hour they were released. Later two MLAs were also invited by Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nasir Aslam Wani in his office chambers who discussed the demands of the farmers in detail with them.
The Minister assured them that he will take up the issue with Chief Minister and call them for second round of talks as soon as possible to sort out the farmers issue. The duo also protested against the highhandedness of the police and shouted slogans even inside the Secretariat Complex. ``We also protested in side of Secretariat complex second time when we were called for talks by the Minister against the highhandedness of the police, said Ch Sukhnandan.
However he expressed satisfaction over the assurance given by the Minister to them saying some concreter outcome will come.
The two MLAs protested against the failure of Government to make direct procurement through FCI from the farmers of the state despite the promisees made with them from time to time. They alleged that the farmers of Jammu region are forced to sell their produce to the private mill owners on through away prices through middle men system. This way the middle men take the maximum benefit while farmers are the most losers, alleged Shyam Choudhary.
The protesting MLAs demanded immediate starting of procurement through FCI from the farmers of the state especially in Jammu region, supply of fertilizers and pesticides and faxing of minimum support price besides payment of compensation and exgratia to farmers whose crops were damaged due to heavy rains and hail storm.
It may be recalled that the farmers of Jammu led by the two MLAs had blocked the Akhnoor road recently demanding setting of of procurement centres by FCI in Jammu region for purchasing the farmers produce and settlement of other demands. Later the additional DC Sheetal Nanda who visited the spot had assured them that the demands raised by them will be settled immediately. However after elapse of over 20 days the demands were not met forcing the two MLAs to lodge protest in front of Secretariat gate today.
