Omar's participation angers JK scribes
Tehelka Think Festival

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 9: The Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah talked about a variety subjects ranging from politics to corruption during the Tehelka Think Festival at Goa. The talk was moderated by NDTV's experienced Barkha Dut . But she `skipped' questions on Omar's strained relation with media. But then the Tehelka cannot justify Omar's participation in the Festival by any means. For upholding truth, Tehelka has been a victim of official harassment. Omar Abdullah has also not given a fair deal to the Fourth Estate in Jammu Kashmir.
It all, started during the Budget session of the Legislative assembly early this year. Three privilege motions were moved against senior Journalists. The senior journalists opined that Legislators had grown increasingly intolerant during Omar's tenure.
Twenty five attacks on media persons including senior editors were reported during last year's summer agitation. Newspapers were seized repeatedly forcing the owners to suspend publication indefinitely on July 18. However, they resumed publication when senior bureaucrats intervened.
A Jammu based newspaper and its printing press were sealed. The editor's residence was raided and the inmates harassed. The ban was lifted by the honorable high court after a week. The government has still not released the advertisements of the said paper. Two more newspaper owners from the winter capital were also persecuted.
Advertisements have also been denied to three Srinagar based newspapers forcing them to curtail the salaries of their employees. This is how Omar led government has been treating the Fourth Estate.
The Tehelka is known for bold and fearless journalism. Besides upholding the truth, the group has to safeguard the honour and dignity of the journalists and the profession as well. By inviting Omar Abdullah to the festival, the Group has only rubbed salt into the wounds of all the persons involved in the second oldest profession in Jammu Kashmir.
