Downplaying act: no differences between NC, Cong

JAMMU, Nov 9: In what can be seen as his reassertion and raising of pitch on revocation of AFSPA from 'selected' areas of the state, the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah contended there was no need to give this 'protection' in areas where Army was not actively engaged. Vouching strongly for removal of special powers to Army he said it is a difficult decision that needs courage. We cannot for last gun to fall silent, he asserted . Choosing to downplay the bickering and opposition its alliance partner Congress raised, the Chief Minister claimed there were no differences between NC and Congress over revocation intention.
" This is a difficult decision but a beginning has to be made ……we cannot wait for last gun to fall silent ………If we wait for that moment that time will never come……. We have to take steps like this at some point", the Chief Minister said while addressing media on the first day of reopening of Durbar in civil Secretariat in the winter capital today. He said he never advocated lifting of Act from the areas where situation is not conducive like Baramullah and Sopore. " We wanted to remove Army from those areas like Srinagar and Budgam where they have no role now……….the militancy related activities have waned completely". There was similar uproar when decision to remove bunkers was taken last year……..it is only a matter of courage ….I am sure it would yield positive results", he observed.
While choosing the downplay and dismiss ' outcry' from the coalition partner Congress, Omar said there were no differences over the issue. "There have no war of words nor any one way thought process", he said, albeit adding in the same breath the process of consultation is going on and would continue till consensus is reached. He said that he also had a brief discussion with the Union Home Minister P Chidambram on telephone last evening on AFSPA, adding, "consultations are in progress and beyond that I would not like to pre-judge what the results of that would be." He said the matter would be taken up in the Unified Headquarters meeting where he would discuss with all concerned partial revocation of AFSPA in the state.
