NC- Cong ties turn bitter again? | Soz has no authority to speak on behalf of Rahul, says 'angry' Omar | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 10: In less than 48 hours he painted a picture of 'all is well' between the ruling allies NC and Congress in the state, the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah snubbed seniormost leader of Congress, no less dignitary than the PCC chief Prof Saif-u-Din Soz for the latter having stated that AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi was 'not happy' with the governance in the state. A simple remark by the PCC president in an interview angered Omar to such an extent that he even questioned Prof Soz's authority of speaking on behalf of Rahul Gandhi.Omar Abdullah on the opening day of his Darbar in Jammu on Wednesday dismissed and denied there were any differences nor strenuous ties ona any account between the partners. In what can be seen as overtures of fresh strain in already fragile ties between Hours after he coalition partners NC and Congress, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today questioned the authority of Jammu and Kashmir PCC chief Saif-ud-din Soz to speak on behalf of Rahul Gandhi. "I don't know whether Soz sahab is authorised to speak on behalf of Rahul Gandhi, most certainly I am not," the Chief Minister of National Conference said, noting that Rahul has never said anything about the issues of governance in the state. Omar's comments came after a local daily published an interview of Soz, in which he claimed Rahul was "not happy" with the governance in the state. "If Rahul has certain feelings regarding governance he will make them known to me. All I can say is that in all the years that I have known Rahul, he has not said anything regarding the way in which the governance has been functioning here," Omar said. It is pertinent to mention here that Prof Soz in capacity of PCC Chief as also chairman of the Coordination Committee has lately turned vocal on issues related to common people besides having expressed unhappiness the way Congress leadership was ignored on crucial issue of revocation of AFSPA from the state by the Chief Minister. "If Rahul has spoken to Soz sahab and Soz sahab is authorised to speak on Rahul's behalf then I really have nothing more to say about that," the Chief Minister said. Omar fresh salvo against the Congress leader is being seen as NC on confrontationist mode with Congress leadership in the state at a time when the latter was expected to convene Coordination Committee meeting to sort out the matters where the allies differ. After the bickerings erupted between the allies late last month over AFSPA controversy, NC high command turned soft and without losing time declared it was for consultation and consensus over the issue before taking any finalc decision. As the tempers subsided from both sides, Prof Soz too announced that the meeting of Coordination Committee would be convened soon after Durbar opens in Jammu. Differences between the ruling National Conference and its coalition partner Congress came to fore recently when the state Congress rallied behind the Army after Omar announced plans to partially revoke the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from the state. Prof Soz had on October 28 accused Omar of not consulting his party for evolving a consensus before unilaterally announcing that the Act would be revoked from some areas in J&K. Omar, however, today asserted that his government has the authority to revoke the "controversial" law. "I have the authority. The elected state government of any state has the authority. In this case (revocation of AFSPA), the authority rests with the governor who would act on the basis of the state government's recommendations," he said a day after holding discussions with the Army on the possibility of partial revocation of AFSPA. |
