| Seminars, rallies, road-shows mark conclusion of Road Safety Week | | | Srinagar, January 07
A number of functions including Auto
Rickshaw-Sumo rallies, cycle race, road-show and seminars marked the conclusion
of Road Safety Week organized by the Traffic department Kashmir here today. The Auto-Sumo rally was flagged off by Superintendent of Police, Traffic Mr. Abdul
Hamid from RTC here today, while the cycle race from Nehru Park to Nishat was
flagged off by Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Mr. Aijaz Iqbal. The Traffic Police personnel conducted a road show from Traffic headquarter to Lal
Chowk and its surroundings with the music band wing of the department enthralling
the passerby. During the programmes conducted by the department, the general masses were
asked to abide by traffic rules to minimize road accidents. The drivers were enjoined
upon not to indulge in rash and reckless driving, avoid use of talking on mobiles,
wrong parking and playing of tape recorders and radios besides using dipper at night. Similarly, the pedestrians were urged to use zebra crossings and foot-paths to avoid
occurrence of accidents. Emphasis was also laid on curbing the menace of overloading in buses. The motor
cyclists were advised to use helmets while driving their motor cycles. In cycle race, Mr. Shabir Ahmad, Shakeel Ahmad Sofi and Mudassir Ahmad
respectively bagged Ist, 2nd and 3rd positions and got cash prizes of Rs. 1000, Rs. 700
and Rs. 500. Concluding the weeklong function, the SP traffic said that 1.82 lakh light and
heavy vehicles are plying on various routes of the valley adding that during the
current financial year so far, 8000 challans have been registered by the department
and Rs. 1.40 crore recovered as fine for violations of Motor Vehicles Act.
