Discussion on G.I malignancies held in SKIMS

Srinagar, Nov 12: The Department of General and Minimal Access surgery SKIMS Saturday held a discussion on G.I Malignancies in Kashmir and advances in Management.
The session was chaired by Prof. A.G. Ahanger, HOD, Department of CVTS. The speaker was Dr. M. Riyaz Lattoo, Senior Resident, Department of General Surgery. The presentation was compiled and drafted by Dr. Suhail Farooq Mir and Dr. Sheikh Riyaz Ahmad, Post Graduates Deptt. Of General surgery. The moderator for the occasion was, Dr. Fazal Qadir Parray, Additional Professor, Department of General Surgery.
In a PowerPoint presentation, which was widely appreciated by the audience, it was revealed that 468 cases of GI cancers had been operated by the department over a period of last three years. This did not include the patients who had been operated for pancreatic and hepatobiliary malignancies. The major chunk of malignancies was of stomach cancers (189 patients) followed by colonic cancers (121 patients) and rectal cancers (112 patients) . The advances made the department of General and minimal Access surgery was highlighted.
It was emphasized that D2 resection, which is widely recognized as a standard oncological procedure, is now routinely done for stomach malignancies in SKIMS.
Total mesorectal excision has come up in a big way in Carcinoma Rectum, which ensures adequate resection margins and dissection of all Lymph nodes. Extended lymphadenectomies are being routinely done for colonic malignancies with better results.
Use of stapling devices has helped in doing low anterior resection and ultra low anterior resections, which helps to ensure adequate resection margins and preserves sphincters. This has helped to drastically decrease the number of colostomies and Ileostomies, which relieves the patient of the psychological trauma of a permanent stoma. The department also presented their commendable work on reconstructive procedures like Neostomach and neorectum.
After the presentation the audience interacted with other faculty members and residents and replied all the queries satisfactorily. The queries were replied by Prof. Khursheed Alam Wani ,HOD department of General Surgery, Prof. Nisar A. Chowdri, Dr. Sameer H. Naqash, Dr. Ajaz A. Malik , Dr. Fazl-Q-Parray and Dr. Rauf A. Wani.
The department of General Surgery thanked the department of Gastroenterology, department of medical oncology, department of Anesthesiology, department of radiation oncology, department of pathology and the department of radio diagnosis for their cooperation and continuous support for making these technically demanding procedures possible.
The session was concluded by the words of appreciation by the Director and Ex-officio to Govt. Prof. Showkat Ali Zargar for the department of General Surgery and promised all the state of the art facilities to the department for carrying out advanced laparoscopic work.
