EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Nov 12: J&K’s ambidextrous all-rounder, Manik Gupta played a key role in salvaging the J&K innings from further drowning and helped Jammu and Kashmir to reach a respectable total of 244/8 at stumps on day-1 of the 4-day Col CK Nayudu U-22 Cricket Tournament match against Chhattisgarh at GGM Science College Hostel ground, here today
J&K’s skipper, Aditya Pratap Singh won the toss and decided to bat first on a true cricketing strip. J&K openers Shubam Khajuria and Siddharth Magotra began in style, hitting some crispy boundaries in first hour of the game, before getting out in quick succession. In form batsman Shubam made 24 off 47 balls with the help of six well timed boundaries, while Magotra contributed 22 off 44 balls including 3 boundaries. Then came skipper Aditya Pratap Singh and this season’s centurion Owais Shah, who both played sedate innings’ but fell at their individual scores of 16 and 24 runs respectively, which followed the wicket of Bandeep Singh (7), who slammed a splendid ton in the last match against Assam and the scoreboard read 97/5.
But, it was promising all-rounder Manik Gupta, who came at number six and played a brilliant innings of 96 runs before getting out LBW on last ball of the day, to an in-swinger bowled by Vishal Kushwa, however, by that time J&K had reached to a respectable total of 244 for 8 wickets 89.1 overs. Apart from Manik’s fabulous knock, the highlight of J&K’s innings was his partnership of 91 runs with wicket-keeper batsman Gokul Baru, who made solid 26 runs. Vishwajeet Singh was another batsman to fell cheaply, before sustaining an injury on his right foot. Wrist spinner Deepak Manhas was on the crease when the stumps were drawn today. For Chhattisgarh, Right-arm medium fast bowler Vishal Kushwa was the wrecker-in-chief, who bowled with nagging line and teasing length to scalp five important wickets by giving away 53 runs in his 20.1 overs bowled during the day. M Hashan was another successful bowler to take 2 wickets, while AK Singh claimed one.
It is pertinent to mention that the support staff with the J&K team did an excellent job in backing their players in crunch situations and helping the team reach a respectable total.
Meanwhile, J&K has a good chance to qualify for the knockout stage, if they manage to script an outright win in this match against Chhattisgarh.
