| Srinagar-Leh highway through, weather improves in Kashmir | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Nov 12 : The 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway, connecting the Ladakh region with the rest of the state, was through after remaining closed for about three days, following improvement in the day temperature.
The weather in the Kashmir valley has improved while the minimum temperature dropped in Leh and Kargil districts of Ladakh region this morning.
A traffic police official today said traffic on both sides was allowed to ply on the Srinagar-Leh highway following improvement in the day temperature.
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) responsible for the maintenace of the highway cleared snow between Zojila-Gumri and stranded vehicles were allowed to move towards their respective destinations yesterday in the afternoon, official sources said.
The highway was closed following snowfall on the highway between Sonmarg to Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia.
A weather office spokesman said the minimum temperature dropped in Leh and Kargil this morning while the maximum was above normal.
He said at Leh, the minimum was minus 4.6 degrees celsius, while at Kargil, it was minus 4.8 degrees against 1.6 degree and minus 3 degrees yesterday.
The maximum was above 9 degrees at both the places, providing much needed relief to the people.
The authorities have decided to operate Kargil Courier Service between Srinagar-Kargil and Kargil-Jammu during the summer when the entire Ladakh region remained cut off due to heavy snowfall.
The highway usually closes from November 1 every year for six winter months. However, from the last few years, the highway remained open till mid of December because of good weather.
