NC-Cong playing with security of state, alleges Prof Chaman | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 12:Condemning the leaders of the coalition of Congress-National Conference for making Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) an issue of public debate, the former Union Minister, Prof Chaman Lal Gupta has observed that they are playing dangerously even with the matters related to security of the State. He urged upon the President of India, who is the Supreme Commander of the Forces, to see that how the Prime Minister is silent over the sensitive issue when its ministers are airing their views in contradictory tunes and making a mess of the matter of a very serious nature. Prof Gupta said that Indian Army is the most disciplined force of the world. In this regard, he pointed out to the many events especially to the ordering of the ceasefire with Pakistan in 1948, when the army was fast advancing in liberating the Pak held areas of Jammu and Kashmir. The army obeyed the orders with a heavy heart. But for the fault of Nehru-Sheikh thinking in this regard that has dearly cost the nation and still there seems no end to the sufferings even after the expiry of over 60 years of this blunder. About the controversy over the revocation of AFSPA, Prof Gupta said the security forces should not be dragged in to such a debate which is of course the creation of the whims of politicians having their own political and vested interests. “The moves of the Chief Minister Omer Abdullah seems to be guided by the compulsions of his own Constituency and the dubious approach which his party has been opting for all along over the years,” Prof Gupta said. It is amazing that the senior ministers at the Centre including the Home Minister and Defence Minister are singing in different tunes and said as expected the former Chief Minister and the Health Minister at the Centre now, Ghulam Nabi Azad too has joined the chorus. Prof. Gupta asked the Chief Minister that if he feels that all is well around him and the security problems are well under control, he should start the lowering of the guards around him. If these have been overcome, the security related expenditure being reimbursed by the Centre should be brought down. In 1990-91 this expenditure was just about Rs 90 Crores which has now been raised to over Rs 800 Crores, he added and said when the situation has improved what are the grounds for ever increasing this security related expenditure. This must be explained to the country men whose kitty is being badly affected on this account. |
