What about empowering Haji Yusuf's widow? | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 12: A meeting of National Conference (NC) womens' wing talked about women empowerment and the measures taken by Omar led government to ` see women on top of the world'. District President, Luxmi Dutta said the government had already launched various schemes for the welfare of women. The provincial president, Rattan Lal Gupta asserted that the party form its very inception had given priority to the issues pertaining women folk and their development. He also boasted of reserving fifty percent seats for women in technical institutions. The NC deserves appreciation for all the `good' work that has been done to empower women till date. But, now is the time when they have to pass the litmus test. Haji Muhammad Yusuf of Bijbehara (Anantnag) district was a dedicated NC worker. He defied militant threats and continued to work for his `revered' organization when militancy was at its peak. That was a time when NC workers, by and large deserted the party. The local Urdu dailies would carry hundreds of classified advertisements of NC workers expressing their dissociation with the party. But Yusuf stood like a rock the odds notwithstanding. Yusuf was handed over to the Crime branch on September 29 by the chief Minister when the duo exchanged heated arguments over an alleged money deal. Yusuf succumbed in custody. The government has ordered a probe but Yusuf's family rejected the probe and preferred judicial intervention for seeking a CBI enquiry into the `killing'. The petition, however, was dismissed for various grounds. Yusuf's widow is in a state of shock. She needs to be rehabilitated and empowered. As claimed by NC leaders, women empowerment is on top of the NC agenda. What can the NC government do for her besides sanctioning her widow fund to the tune of Rs 500 per month? |
