EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Nov 13:
Vaibhavi Chandel
Separatist leaders and pro Kashmir parties have many times demanded vacation of agricultural land from army and other paramilitary forces in valley but there is 500 kanal land of University of Jammu that is not being vacated by the army despite repeated requests of varsity authorities.
The expansion plans of Jammu University have come to a halt as the army is not vacating its 500 kanals of land at its main campus in Jammu.
Despite repeated attempts from the JU to convince army to vacate the land, army has not shown any signs of moving out of the land in near future. The land could be used to develop infrastructure for academic activities.
The land about is estimated to be in crore and is being occupied by the army for stationing its troops. Transit camp 203 of army is established on the said land.
This occupation has also thwarted the expansion plans of the JU that is finding it difficult to construct buildings and other infrastructure. As a result the authorities are forced to construct buildings on the available land that is making campus congested.
It was strange that when son of soil, General NC Vij was chief of army staff, the University administration had aggressively pursued case for revocation of its land from army but despite that army did not oblige.
A university official on anonymity said, “The issue of land under the army’s occupation has been raised in the council meetings of the varsity many times but to no avail. The army is not ready to move out of this land until they are provided a substitute. In seems that they (army) are not going to move out of our land”
Former union Minister of State for Defence, Chaman Lal Gupta, blamed erstwhile state government for not taking a strong stand on the issue.
“We had identified a land in Sunjwan (about 12 Kms from present location), which was to be allotted to army as an alternative land but the then chief minister Farooq Abdullah did not agree as he had plans to develop residential colonies in Sunjwan area and the proposal was shelved” said Gupta.
The JU Vice Chancellor, Professor Varun Sahni had also taken up the issue of this land last year. Sahni presented the case by saying that university was suffering academically due to the lack of land and demanded that the land be given back to the varsity.
