Army cannot be side-stepped from security responsibilities | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 13- Media disclosures about the presentation made by Lt. general S.A. Hasnain, corps commander of 15th corps during the unified headquarters meeting on November 9 have been received with concern by many inside and outside the State. Reports about the presentation made by the commander have been graphic. Originally carried by the 'Hindu' newspaper, the media have given wide publicity to what the general said at the unified headquarters meeting. "If AFSPA is revoked now the country will have to grant independence to J&K in 2016." These are fairly startling revelations by someone who knows what he is talking about. The same reports have quoted the general as saying that it was Pakistan, ISI and the terrorists who wanted the AFSPA revoked while the people of the State wanted Bijli, Paani and Sadak. The assertions made by the general were followed by the statement of the defence minister, A.K. Antony who categorically said it was the unified headquarters and not the State Chief Minister who had been authorized by the cabinet committee on security (CCS) to decide on the partial revocation of AFSPA. This set at rest the controversy that had been raised when the Chief Minister said it was the State government that would decide on the revocation of AFSPA. Replying to media questions on the revocation of the act in J&K, the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh said the matter was still being discussed. The statement by the Prime Minister had finally cleared the air on the issue.
