EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, NOVEMBER 14- “The visit of Buddhist leader Dalai Lama to Jammu and Akhnoor on 16thNovember will immensely help in further boosting the pilgrim tourism in Jammu region”, maintained Minister for Tourism, Mr. Nawang Rigzin Jora and Minister for Health, Horticulture & Floriculture, Mr. Sham Lal Sharma at a press conference here today.
The Archaeological Survey of India has discovered this ancient Budhist site at Akhnoor some years back which is presumed to be of great historic and religious significance as per Buddhists point of view.
Giving details about the proposed visit of Dalai Lama to Jammu and Akhnoor, the Ministers observed that with the discovery of Buddhist ancient monuments in Akhnoor, the area will be able to occupy a significant place in the world of pilgrim tourism. The Archaeological experts have established that Buddhism came to Jammu during the life time of Lord Buddha as monastic complex discovered at Ambaran Akhnoor suggests. This historic site is located at Ambaran on the right bank of river Chenab at Akhnoor. The ASI had carried out a scientific excavation some time back to ascertain the association of the famous Akhnoor Terracotta heads with the Buddhists monastic establishment at Ambaran besides studying the layout and planning of the site, believed to be the only ancient Budhist site in Jammu region, the Ministers informed.
Mr. Sham Lal Sharma said that unique discovery of relic caskets and other remains during the excavation has opened a new chapter in the history and culture of the region, as it is for the first time that in the province of Jammu, such Buddhist remains have been discovered.
Since the site has historic value connected to Buddhist era, an idea was conceived to organize a Photo Exhibition at a prominent place to highlight the significance of the site. Accordingly, a photo exhibition was organized through a renowned Photo Journalist at Taj Hotel New Delhi in August, 2011, wherein pictures/monuments of Buddhists era at Ambaran, Akhnoor along with other beautiful scenes of river Chenab, ancient temples and religious sites of Akhnoor were showcased. The exhibition was visited by a large number of historians and people who highly appreciated the effort, he maintained. His Holiness the Dalai Lama also visited the said exhibition and expressed great pleasure over the pictures of monuments of religious importance and other antiques which have been preserved at the site.
During his visit to the exhibition, Dalai Lama expressed his desire to visit this monastery.
Another photo exhibition depicting the monuments of the Buddhist site at Ambaran has also been proposed to be organized at Kala Kendra, Jammu on 16th & 17th November 2011 on the pattern of Hotel Taj, New Delhi. The exhibition will be visited by His Holiness before proceeding to Akhnoor, said Mr. Sham.
