Stop sale of spurious drugs?
11/14/2011 11:01:00 PM
Latest reports have revealed that spurious drugs are easily available in Jammu and Kashmir state which should not be treated lightly because the per capita consumption of allopathic drugs is highest in this state. That Kashmir has become a safe place for the sale and consumption of spurious drugs has been confirmed by none other than a renowned cardiothoracic surgeon,Dr Naresh Trehan .Well Trehan's claim is based on his long experience. In fact he has been treating people in Jammu and Kashmir since 1997 and a large number of people from the border state continue to receive treatment from Trehan and his team in his hospital in Gurgaon in Haryana.Trehan wants the Government to initiate measures for checking sale of spurious drugs in the state. He has even suggested to leading pharmaceutical companies to carry out a survey so that exact details were available on the number and size of the availability and sale of spurious drugs in Jammu and Kashmir.
Compared to other places people in Jammu and Kashmir have been taking lots of medicines for treating various body ailments. But the rate of consumption of drugs further increased with the rise of militancy related activities and violence in the state. In the initial stages consumption of drugs was higher in the Kashmir valley than in the Jammu region but during the last 20 years the level of dependence on different medicines shot up in Jammu. This is reflected in the phenominal increase in the number of shops selling medicines and in nursing homes besides the diagnostic centres and clinical laborat ories.A stage has come when the number of shops selling medicines and nursing homes is higher than those of confectionaries and bakeries. And Dr Trehan says that with the high incidence of physical ailments bogus phramaceutical companies have been manufacturing spurious drugs for which they find Jammu and Kashmir and some areas in North east as the safe markets. This is so because in Jammu and Kashmir the existing drug control policy is too weak to act as a deterrent and it was not being implemented and enforced vigorously. Reports said that bogus pharmaceutical companies and their medical representatives have been providing various incentives in cash and kind to doctors for prescribing medicines manufactured in their factories.Experts argue that intake of any spurious drug may not only fail to cure the ailment but can pose a serious health problem too.In various cases, especially in the semi urban areas medicines that have crossed expiry dates are being sold to patients.Doctors are of the opinion that checking sale of spurious drugs should be carried out on a war footing because of high intake of drugs by the people in Jammu and Kashmir.High incidence of diabetes, hypertension, cardiac and renal problems besides mental and psychic disorders, all because of militancy related violence, has warranted increase in peoples' dependence on medicines. In Jammu and Kashmir chemists and druggists no longer insist on selling any medicine only as per the doctors' prescription people buy medicines which to them is as simple and easy as buying cakes and candies. The state Government should first of all amend the existing drug control Act so that the new law acts as a deterrent and makes it mandatory for the concerned Government agencies to monitor regularly the genuiness of medicines available in tthe shops.Any further delay in enforcing new law may lead to bigger incidence of physical and mental ailment that could make people of the state an ailing generation.
