Azad's mantra: prefer Omar than rival…..! | Backing CM on AFSPA | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 14: Former Chief Minister and Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has once again made himself conspicous in the political space of J&K by taking a stance on AFSPA which is contrary to what Congress as a party and PCC leadership in particular has adopted. While the latter has been supporting of consultations, debate and consensus , Azad has openly disfavoured what he says 'public debate' and says the issue should not be politicized and any decision on it should be left to the Chief Minister and the Union Home Minister. In other words Azad has antagonised the stand taken up by the PCC Chief Prof Saif-u-Din Soz and supported by others over withdrawal of special powers given to army under AFSPA. As a matter of his statement that came few days back it may look as simple as anyone sympathising with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah or the quarters which are strongly vouching for it. "It is a very sensitive issue and I would request all political parties of Jammu and Kashmir and outside J & K that let us leave this issue to the Chief Minister and the Home Minister of India……,". But in fact it is loaded with political connotations beyond what is on the face of the statement. Only a politically naïve person or those ignorant about political contours withing the Congress with 'ambitious' factions out to pull down each other. Ironically enough, Azad otehrwise has been seen as one always critical about Omar Abdullah's performance and what his oft repeated slogan of poor dvelopment scenario with stillness in the works which had been started during his tenure as Chief Minister. Only recently during his visit to Bhaderwah and Kishtwra, Azad hit out at the NC led government over very poor development scenario in the state. Suddenly, he turned sympathetic on as crucial and controversial issue as AFSPA which brought the two allies, inclduing one to which he belongs to loggerheads and severe bickering. Azad has specfically opposed the stance of 'consultation' taken by Prof Soz by asserting that any stand on removal of AFSPA is totally an administrative decision and it should be left to J&K CM Omar Abdullah and Union Home Minister P Chidmabaram…….. 'it is for them who to consult or who not to consult.' The former Chief Minister indirectly taking a dig at Soz, said the issue should not be politicised for settling political scores. However, Azad's assertion on this is being seen as nothing but to attack and undermine PCC chief , only to settle his own score with a seasoned leader who he feels is his rival and competitor in race for political ambitions in the state. It is no secret that ever since Prof Soz took over as chief of the state Congress , Azad has not relented and instead intensified the activities that resulted in creation of two factions , which have been on warpath constantly. Azad's hidden mantra in supporting Omar over AFSPA therefore is nothing but- 'prefer Omar than rival…….' But the politics like this only amounts to creating further confusion and sending wrong signals across in a sensitive state like J&K. None other than Mr Azad udnerstands it well. |
