New Delhi asks Omar to wait for withdrawal of AFSPA
11/15/2011 9:55:45 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 15: With Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, moving from a course of confrontation to compromise on the issue of AFSPA withdrawal, Centre may discuss the matter afresh after three months.
Official sources said that neither the Defence Minister nor the Army Chief was prepared to buy the arguments dished out by Omar Abdullah in support of his demand for lifting of AFSPA from the districts of Srinagar, Budgam, Jammu and Kathua.
Omar had informed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his cabinet colleagues including A.K.Antony that since there was no presence of Army in these four districts withdrawal of AFSPA from these areas should have no problem. But his views were not accepted after the Defence Minister informed his colleagues that the top Army functionaries fear escalation in militancy related activities and violence in areas from where AFSPA was revoked.
Sources said that the Army functionaries in Jammu and Kashmir had already conveyed to the Army Chief Gen.V.K.Singh, their apprehensions on extension of militancy related activities to the districts of Srinagar, Budgam, Jammu and Kathua once AFSPA was withdrawn. Militants could take advantage of the situation and establish their hideouts in areas that had been sanitized.
Reports said that the besides the Prime Minister, other central government leaders assured Omar Abdullah that the issue would be debated during a meeting of cabinet committee on security after two to three months. And the security scenario in the state would be monitored during the ensuing three months.
Meanwhile, Omar has been asked to take the Congress leaders, especially the PCC Chief, Prof. Saif-ud-Din Soz, into confidence while framing or formulating important policies. Sources said that it is in the context of this development that Omar Abdullah has opted for compromise and consultation with the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir.
Chief Minister has also been advised to desist from airing views that cast aspersions on the Army’s and on the AFSPA withdrawal issue. And Omar has assured his friends in the Congress in Delhi that he would try to narrow down differences with the Army.
