AFSPA controversy to create more fissures in NC-Cong coalition
11/15/2011 11:51:33 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 15: With Defense Ministry and Army totally opposing the revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), the fissures have resurfaced in state coalition government as a majority section of Congress in the state have taken serious exception to Chief Minister's statements in this regard.
According to sources a section of Congress leaders owing allegiance to PCC chief Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz have also expressed their serious reservations against the Chief Minister as they believe that any decision in haste on AFSPA revocation will be tantamount to Congress interests.
Sources said the reservations expressed by Defense Ministry and Army has also perturbed the Chief Minister and his party which has raised the issue of AFSPA revocation to please its political constituency in Kashmir and score some points against its arch rival People Democratic Party (PDP).
Sources said the Defense Ministry and army which has taken a principled stand on the issue has added to the worries of NC and in case the Defense Ministry succeeds in prevailing upon the Union Cabinet the NC will not succeed in its bid to revoke AFSPA or Disturbed Areas Act. The Army sources said is also against the partial withdrawal of AFSPA as it will hamper its anti terrorism operations in the state.
Moreover in view of militancy still prevailing in the state and militants still being active in upper reaches and hilly areas withdrawal of AFSPA will prove counterproductive at this juncture, sources said, adding the top army brass while opposing the decision has conveyed its apprehensions to Defense ministry and Union Government.
On the basis of the feed back from the armed forces the Defense Minister is understood to have taken a principled stand on the issue, sources said, adding Mr Antony has conveyed the same to Prime Minister as well as the Chief Minister of the state during his meeting with him.
Sources said emboldened by the stand of Defense Minister , the PCC chief and former Union Minister Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz who from very beginning was opposed to withdrawal of AFSPA has got a shot in arm saying his stand has been vindicated fully. Prof Soz who enjoys full support of Congress leaders in the state has gird up his loins against the Chief Minister and it is all set to defeat any move of NC regarding the revocation of AFSPA for time being, sources said, adding this stand of the Congress is going to add to the worries of Chief Minister and NC.
Sources said Congress High Command in Delhi was not also happy with the style of functioning of the NC leaders especially its former spokesperson and additional general secretary, Dr Mustafa Kamal who has made some controversial statements in the recent past against the Congress, accession and Union Government. Bowing before the Congress pressure and to save its Government in the state the NC chief and Union Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah was left with no alternative but to strip off Dr Kamal of the party posts to avert any further controversy between coalition partners. This for the time being averted the rift between two coalition partners. However the stand of Chief Minister on AFSPA and reservations expressed against the same by a strong section of Congress is slated to create more fissures between coalition partners.
