Urdu Journalism, played a major role during British regime

JAMMU, November 16: “Urdu Journalism played a vital role in the first freedom struggle movement of 1857, it was the Urdu Journalist who through their writings provoke the Indians to struggle against Bruisers. Many Urdu journalists get killed due to their fearless writings against Britishers”.

These views were expressed by Professor Shehnaz Anjum of Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi while delivering an extension lecture on the topic “First Freedom struggle of 1857 and Urdu Journalism”.

The lecture was organized by department of Urdu here today in the Professor Gain Chand Jain Seminar Hall. The function was presided over by Former HOD Urdu Kashmir University Prof. Quddose Javeed, Dr Ashok Kumar member SSRB was the Chief Guest on the occasion while Editor Daily Uddan Tanveer Ahmed Khatieb was the Guest of Honour on the occasion. Prof. Shohab Inayat Malik HOD Urdu was also present on the occasion.

Faculty members including Professor Sukhchain Singh, Dr Mohd Reyaz Ahmed, Dr Chaman lal , Dr A R Manhas. Besides Students, scholars and respectable citizens were also present on the occasion.

In her thought provoking lecture Professor Shehnaz Anjum informed that due to the writings of Urdu Journalist in 1857 a awareness came to existence in Indian people that they should now get rid of slaveness.

It was due to their writings that people came openly against Britishers and fought a war against Britishers in 1857.

Professor Shehnaz Anjum said that these lines inspired a lot to the people of India against the Britishers. She said that after this freedom struggle many Urdu journalists were hanged by Britishers. In this connection she presented the example of Molvi Barker Ali who was hanged and get killed by the Britishers after 1857.

In his address the Dr Ashok Kumar member SSRB congratulated the department of Urdu for organizing a thought provoking lecture. He said that Urdu had played a vital role in the freedom struggle of India.

Inqalab Zindabad is the slogan which was given by Urdu and through this slogan Britishers were always feared..

In his presidential address Professor Quddose Javeed lauded the thought provoking lecture of Shehnaz Anjum. Professor Quddose Javeed informed that it was the efforts of Urdu Journalist that India got freedom in 1947.

Earlier in his welcome address Prof. Shohab Inayat Malik highlighted the origin and development of Urdu Journalism in the country.

Dr Mohd Reyaz Ahmed who conducted the proceedings of the program too highlighted the role of Urdu Journalism in the Freedom Struggle of India and informed that Urdu Journalism had played the same role for the independence of India which the leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Moti Lal Nehru, Jawahar LAL Nehru, Mohd Ali Jenah had played.
