Omar needs to handle issues in cool & matured way ? | | | the Defence Minister,A.K.Antony's remarks made after he had a meeting with the Kashmir Chief Minister indicates that the way Omar Abdullah acted and reacted on the issue of partial withdrawal of AFSPA was neither cool nor mature.Antony said that since withdrawal of AFSPA from some areas in Jammu and Kashmir was very sensitive it needed to be handled in a cool and matured way. This way one thing becomes clear that Omar Abdullah,as is the habit with young politicians that too when they are in power, usually reacts strongly. That is what he did while reacting to Army's "no" to his demand for partial withdrawal of AFSPA.He said that "no" is no option and he did not wish to wait for the last gun to fall silent.During the last three years Omar has developed the habit of raising the pitch whenever he talks about AFSPA withdrawal, withdrawal of troops from within the civilian areas, restoration of autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir, settlement of the Kashmir issue through dialogue with Pakistan and the valley based separatists. And when he finds himslf in trouble over raising his voice on such issues he is quick to go into hibernation or gives up his mood of defiance. When Omar Abdullah went to New Delhi to meet Prime Minister,Manmhan Singh,UPA chairperson,Sonia Gandhi,Defence Minister,A,K.Antony,Home Minister,P.Chidambaram and others he seemed to be in a hurry. He seemed to have made up his mind to be on the path of confrontation. But when he found his energy having been deflated by the defiant attitude adopted by the Army Chief,Gen.V.K.Singh,and the Defence Minister,A.K.Antony Omar started talking about compromise and consultation with his alliance partner ,the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir.Instead of sticking to "no" is no option the Chief Minister talked about his decision to narrow down differences with the Army. Before leavi ng for New Delhi Omar had allowed an impression to grow in Kashmir that as Chief Minister he would order withdrawal of AFSPA from some areas. His "I can do it" attitude got melted when he was told about the Army's apprehensions on the situation assuming ugly dimensions if the AFSPA was withdrawn from the districts of Srinagar ,Budgam,Jammu andd Kathua. Omar didd not want to take any risk because he had been told by his well wishers that if something went wrong in areas fromwhere AFSPA was withdrawn he could lose power and that too when the leaders of the state unit of the Congress continue to gun for his blood. It is not only in case of AFSPA withdrawal that Omar has raised his pitch. He has done so when his Government announced an ambtious employment policy last year. The policy faild to end the problem of unemployment and now he has come up with a new recruitment policy that has invited deep displeasure from the educated unemployed youth in the state. He has been seen raising his pitch when he commits himself to erradicating corruption from the state.Thank God he has not imitated his father,Dr Farooq Abdullah, who had,as Chief Minister, announced that he would see that the corrupt are drowned in the Dal Lake. The level of corruption has increased. It took more than three years for him and his Government to fill the vacant posts in the State Accountability Commission and the CIC.But he is yet to provide these bodies the basic infrastructure Omar is seen to be slow always and he simply feigns to be in haste.Hope by the time he returns to Jammu he may have learnt to handle people-related issues in a cool and matured manner. |
