POPULATION AND STARVATION
KHUSHWANT S RANIAL11/16/2011 9:26:31 PM
The population of the World has crossed 07 billion mark recently and if the pace of fertility is not checked at all in the near future, then, as per the reports of demographers it could touch to the mark of 15 billion by the end of this century .This staggering figure is in itself an apparent threat to the Planet Earth .How much more weight and pressure this much planet can hold? Nature's balance will be shaken . How the environment can escape from the clutches of cruel pollution. Higher the amount of pollution, highest would be the arrival of varying type of diseases asking for deeper trouble for the mankind to sustain a worthy livelihood. Already , With every newer addition of a soul on this earth, there is an increasing reduction in the space which means the land requirement to generate more resources like food, clothing, shelter, dairy and poultry products etc. for the mankind to survive would also recede equally and beyond limit, the chances of starvation will augment. Not only due to inadequate stumbling demand- supply ratio, there will be hike in prices and unexpected explosion in the Inflation but also the crime rate will multiply to meet the day today needs of the life. The theory of Survival of the Fittest would prevail. Suicidal tendencies will grow unabated among those who shall not be in the fittest state to meet the challenges of the life altogether.
No doubt ,keeping in view all these potent threats ,the social scientist have already warned the world to devise means and methods to do something to place a check on the rampant growth of population by resorting to different natural/ unnatural means like use of contraceptives, pills ,spacing of the child birth ,surgical operations, adoption of small family norms through dissemination of educational awareness and thanks to such concrete effort made therein ,the fertility rate has fallen worldwide due to adequate steps taken by the various states/nations since 1950 .Even the demographic figures supports the fact that in the whole of Central America, East Asia ,China ,the fertility rate has come down from 6.7% per women to 2.1% ,1.6% and 1% respectively. In the Asia, where India 17.5% and China's who is home to 19.4% world's Population if clubbed together form around world's 1/3rd population if adopt stringent measures, one can find that earth would be saved of the heavy burden and demand of the basic necessities of the life. So far China being a communist country, rising above petty religious prejudices has strongly enforced laws by adopting one child norm in the country and has contributed a lot in lessening the ordeal. Comparatively, India being a cosmopolitan nation and democratic state is presently the second most largest populous state after China in the South Asian region ,having 17.5% of the world's total population spreading over world 's 2.4% area, undoubtedly and undeniably has managed to place a check and succeeded as well in her endeavours but more is desired yet .The horrible affect of this overpopulation is that our country has the highest numbers of beggars in the world around who seek food ,shelter and clothing to survive and there are around 33% of the population who has access to one time meal in a day.
In the same manner, The only region where there has not been seen sea change is in the African sub continent where only in certain parts there has been a modest drop in total fertility which still stands at five children per women and if strong remedial measure are not taken, the present one billion population of Africa is expected to touch 3.6 billion by the end of this century. In certain parts like Uganda, Ethiopia, Somalia, where nature has struck natural calamities so many times and reign adversities through famines and local uprisings, feudal tribal clashes etc. unabated growth in the population is bound to compound the starvation issue in perpetual way. Hunger is root cause of all the ills. One can live without clothing, education and shelter but cannot stay hungry for a longer period and in order to survive if one has to suck the blood to quench one's thirst and eat the flesh then homo sapiens would spare no moment to become a beast and turn even omnivorous .
In simple words, the population and starvation are correlated to one another. More the souls, more will be the requirement to survive .An extrapolation of future population trends state that if the existing fertility and mortality remain unchecked and unmanaged, which at present looks quite dismal, then it is not beyond expectation that by year 2300, the world population would reach around 3.5 trillion people, which will be too difficult to manage and sustain the growth and development in the healthy manner forcing imminent starvation to prevail. Hence urgent need of the hour is that every nation must rise above the national barriers to devise a strategy to lend support to one another in spreading social awareness among the masses to fight with this deadly monster of over population to save mankind from the phase of unlikely starvation. The United Nation and World Health Organization must strive together to provide economic support to those under developed and developing countries of the world who lack strength and vision to see the alarming threat looming over the coming generations and ensure their active participation in the drive to root out this Over-population malady by striving together in unison for excellent recognisable output in next couple of decades. This is not at all a negative projection but a stark reality whose horrible repercussions no one can deny even in the wildest dreams.
