Upbeat PDP tears into NC, says Omar compromises for power | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 16: It was expected that the PDP would sharpen its attack on the NC in general and Chief Minister in particularly in the wake of Omar Abdullah's failure to get the AFSPA revoked, even partially, and it precisely happened yesterday. The PDP president Mehbooba Mufti took full advantage of the situation created by the Chief Minister's mishandling of the issue and made a concerted attempt at lowering his position in the eyes of the people, particularly the people of Kashmir. Omar Abdullah had given the people of Kashmir to understand that he would dictate terms to the powers-that-be in New Delhi and the army, made them to fall in line and give him absolute powers so that he could revoke the AFSPA and demilitarize certain areas. Everyone knows that Omar Abdullah has returned to the state empty-handed. He must be singing in the strain of the swan and running for cover. Shrewd as she is, Mehbooba tore into the NC and levelled umpteen serious charges against the Chief Minister and the government that he leads. She ridiculed Omar Abdullah and said he could make any compromise to remain in power. "Omar has lowered the prestige of CM's institution by 'begging and bowing' before New Delhi for the sake of power and sticking to chair. The NC-led government has established a mafia raj where the arrogance of power is conspicuous… mar is busy in saving his chair using all his energy to stabilize his position… He is making all kinds of compromises which have undermined the dignity of the institution," she said. She not only painted Omar Abdullah black and power-hungry, but she also dismissed the government that he heads as the most corrupt government the state has ever seen. Terming his rule as "mafia raj", she accused his ministers of "draining public money for their own comforts". "The state is witnessing the NC-led coalition government indulging in corrupt practices and loot of exchequer on an unprecedented scale," she said and added that the "NC-led coalition government has left the people of the state high and dry". She even taunted Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah saying they sacrificed "their own relative at the behest of New Delhi" for the sake of personal profit and power and asked what could the people expect from them? Mehbooba even went to extent of saying that Omar Abdullah has no control over his ministers and the result has been that they have been exploiting the situation to their own advantage. "While CM is feeling insecure, his ministers and close coterie around him are taking advantage of this ……They have been looting the state. This has led to total chaos, added to the miseries of people and brought everything to a grinding halt," she said. Significantly, Mehbooba also tried to identify herself and the PDP with the youth who have been protesting against the new job policy and demanding its withdrawal. "The party (NC) and the government which had promised government jobs to the 8th pass and stipend to the educated youth, has now asked the same educated youth to work as daily wagers on 50 percent salary on regular jobs," the PDP president said. The PDP president, in effect, sought to win over people across the state as well as the protesting youth by holding Omar Abdullah, the NC and the NC-Congress coalition government squarely responsible for the prevailing mess in the state. Her whole objective was to convince the people that the NC-led coalition government just could not be trusted and depended upon and that it has outlived its utility. Omar Abdullah and the NC leaders who have been feeling the heat for quite sometime now would have to do a lot of explaining in order to neutralize the influence of the no-holds-barred propaganda blitz launched not only by the PDP but also by other political parties like the BJP and the JKNPP. They will have to put in hard work to counter the PDP and others. It is difficult to say that they would succeed. Actually, Omar Abdullah and other NC leaders have nothing whatever to put in the political market to sell. They have lost the way and they have lost the people's confidence. It appears. |
