From supporting to opposing AFSPA | Farooq has gone a long way! | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 16: The former Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah supported his son, Omar Abdullah's AFSPA campaign saying the situation had taken `favourable turn' and the law was not needed now. Like Kashmir, Farooq too seems to have changed. He happened to be the only politician from valley to support AFSPA much to the disappointment of his son. Exactly one year ago, On November 28, Farooq while addressing a seminar at Kolkatta said AFSPA was needed to fight terrorism effectively. He also supported Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA). "Implementing these laws is the only way to fight terrorism effectively", he said. During Farooq Abdullah's regime, Jammu Kashmir happened to be the first state to flirt with POTA. In fact it was extended to the state when it was still an ordinance. Then it was called Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance (POTO). A Srinagar based daily had in its detailed report had said Farooq extended the law to ensure extension to his friend, Muhammad Yusuf Khan as chairman of the Jammu Kashmir Bank. However, in the Kolkata seminar, Farooq said: "I had extended the law to the state keeping in view the larger interests of the country." A few cases were also registered one in Safa Kadal area of old city. This law authorizes the police to seal any property which the police believe has been used as a shelter by militants. The law was, however, kept in abeyance by Mufti Muhammad Sayed when he assumed office in November 2002. Farooq's recent statement also made a mention of Syed Ali Geelani's five point formula. He too had sought revocation of AFSPA and other `draconian' laws. Revocation of AFSPA is in the demand list of Geelani, he said. Farooq, perhaps wanted to convey that the legislation must be revoked as Syed Geelani wished so. Farooq, it seems, has changed since November last. Geelani had made the demand during last year's agitation. While addressing the seminar at Kolkatta, Farooq was well aware of the demand. But he opposed it. Farooq's Kolkatta statement had disappointed all. An elderly member of the National Conference expressed dismay over Farooq's statement. "He has been creating problems for his son and all of us", he said. |
