Unemployed allege misappropriation in NREGA in Bhaderwah | Mohd Majid Malik | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Doda, Nov17: The government of India had brought NREGA with the objectives of providing livelihood security in far flung rural areas by providing at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment but the same ambitious policy has virtually failed to meet the objectives in Bhaderwah block, some unemployed resented. They alleged that there is strong nexus among government officials, contractors and middlemen who engage human resources at their own convenience. Rakesh Kumar lamented that things have become tough for the unemployed youth due to the nexus in the concerned department at various block offices. He said that the corruption in NREGA has crossed the limit now therefore the elected representatives here are also openly speaking in the public domain on the matter but irony is no one takes step to bell the cat. According to sources said the NREGA has become milch cow for the government officials, the contractors and the middlemen instead of ensuring employment to the rural masses in Bhaderwah block. According to sources even the concerned officials are involved at times in cases of gender based discrimination in wages. “A woman is paid less than a man though both of them do the same work in NREGA, sources informed and said that corruption is the most serious issue in NREGA which is prevalent at every level. “Though the wages are paid to the engaged persons through the Bank accounts but contractors and middle men comfortably get their share, they added. Interestingly, all are aware about the rampant corruption in NREGA in Doda district but none of these working to bring back the NREGA on the right track, sources alleged, adding that the basic unit i.e. the Gram Sabhas are not taken into confidence to issue job cards, preparation of muster rolls, planning, implementation and monitoring of the schemes.
