Third front may not have teeth in J&K? | | | If at all a third front was formed in Jammu and Kashmir will it give new twist and turn to the already confusing political frame in the state ? This question has started bothering,if not many, but atleast the National Conference and the Congress circles. In the context of the ongoing political scenario in Jammu and Kashmir possibilities for a third front to make a dent in the political structure in the state are remote. The Minister for Agriculture,G.H.Mir,and his friend,Hakim Mohd.Yasin,a former Minister, had initiated measures for forming a third front in the state between 2007 and 2008.At one stage the CPIM leader,Mohd.Yusuf Tarigami too had associated himself with the task of third front formation. But the moment G.H.Mir was inducted in the cabinet, headed by Omar Abdullah,he abandoned, for the time being, his plan on forming a third front.Possibly he would not have given up his hunt for third front formation, even after having been given a berth in the cabinet ,had he not succeeded in hooking to his proposed front those PDP activists who were unhappy with the style of functioning of the Muftis.Presumably Mir had been misled by false promises some PDP activists had made to him that once the front was formed they would join him These activists had realised that their future in the state's politics could be bleak without the support and blessings of Mufti Mohd.Sayeed.Mir and Hakim lost interest. If one takes into account the nature of the political structure that exists in Jammu and Kashmir one may find that possibilities of a third front for becoming a force to reckon with are bleak.Yes,the front can have the stamina to make its presence felt if it has the support and backing of either the PDP,or the National Conference or the Congress. One could think of third front having the strength to tease mainstream poliical parties like the Congress the NC and the PDP if the BJP and the Panthers Parrty join hands, which,at the present juncture, seems to be an improbability.Even if such a front was formed it may remain Jammu centric because the areas of their influence in the Kashmir valley is highly limited.A third front that could make other parties shiver in their pents can be in the shape of NC-PDP-Panthers combine. But possibility for NC and PDP joining hands is very bleak. Hence there is no need for either the NC or the Congress to get worried over reports on third front formation. The plan on formation of a third front was given a shape during the 1977 Assembly elections. The elections were warranted after the Congress withdrew its support to the Government headed by Sheikh Abdullah. At that time the Janata Party had joined hands with the Awami Action Committee headed by Molvi Farooq. This third front had planned to "maul" both the National Conference, headed by Sheikh Abdullah, and the state unit of the Congress led by Mufti Mohd.Sayeed.The poll results revealed that Janata Party led front was mauled in the Kashmir valley where it won two seats out of 39.Since the birth of the PDP in 1999 Jammu and Kashmir has to remain content with coalition rule. And it is going to be either Congress-PDP coalition or Congress-NC coalition. The state has already tasted the Congress-PDP coalition rule between 2002 and 2008 and since 2008 the state is under Congress-NC rule. This political arrangement may not face any threat from any other front or combine because except for the Congress, the PDP and the NC no other party has roots or areas of influence in all the three regions of Jammu and Kashmir.
