Mir for micro planning for landmass, water resources conservation | | | EARLY TIMES REPOTR Jammu, Nov 17 (KNS): Saying growing population is a major threat to the land and water resources of the state, Minister for Agriculture, Ghulam Hassan Mir has called for micro planning for conservation of landmass and water resources of the state to safeguard the future.
The Minister was addressing the farmers after inaugurating One Day seminar on “Land Resources Conservation” organized by J&K State Land Use Board and Directorate of Agriculture Jammu. He said that agriculture universities of the state have greater role in the conservation of landmass resources by taking technology to the field for increasing the per hectare production. He said due to small landholdings and less productivity the people do not take much interest in the farming activities. He said their interest can be restored by increasing the production and making agriculture a profitable activity and this can be done only by the researchers and scientists. He said this would definitely halt the distress land sale by the farmers.
Mir said that our main thrust should be to stop the convergence of irrigated agriculture land to non agriculture purposes and added that government has already brought a bill in last assembly session for total ban on the change of use of irrigated agriculture land . He called upon the civil society of the state to come forward and support the initiatives of the government in this regard which is pivotal for safeguarding the future of the state.
Referring to the rain fed areas of the state; the Minister said that state needs a comprehensive planning for conservation of rain water during spring in Kashmir and monsoon season in Jammu. He said the move would greatly help in extending the irrigation facilities to the uncovered areas. He said conservation of rain water has proved highly beneficial and the state was vigorously pursuing a mission project with centre in this regard.
Director Agriculture Jammu, Ajay Khajuria highlighted the role of State land use board for issuing of probation of conservation of agriculture land for non-agricultural purposes and awareness thereof in the wake of upcoming industrial areas and the residential colonies in the State. He stressed upon the farmers to go for diversification of crops to get more production. He also stressed upon them for massive plantation to control soil erosion especially on sloppy lands and hilly areas.
Director extension SKAUST-J Dr K. S. Risan gave details about the present scenario of agriculture land available for cultivation and various techniques for conservation of land and water resources of the State while Chief Scientists SKUAST Dr A. K. Raina highlighted the steps taken by the University for rain water harvesting in Jammu division and called for a holistic approach from all the stakeholders for implementing scientific techniques for water harvesting.
