Air service to Kargil from Nov 28 | Akhoon reviews airbase expansion project, | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Nov 17 (KNS): Minister for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CA&PD) Mr. Qamir Ali Akhoon today chaired a high level meeting attended by the civil administration and representatives from Air force and Civil Aviation to discuss the start of air services to Kargil and the upgradation of runway in the mountainous border district.

Bhatia, Air II FQ AOC J&K, Representative from Civil Aviation department, Wg Cdr Sanjay Agarwal, Director Airport M. Suresh, Managing Director, JKSRTC J. S. Tandan, S.P. city North J.S. Johar, S.P. AHJ Jammu. M. L. Mehar, Senior Superintendent ATC S. K. Anand and Liaison Officer AN32 Mohammad Yousuf attended the meeting.
The meeting was told that the existing runway at the Kargil airbase is proposed to be extended to 9000 meters to facilitate the landing of the civil planes like M-76. It was said that till now only AN-3 2 plane can land at the airbase which is unable to meet the rush of passengers to the district.
The Minister directed the district administration to initiate the process for the acquisition of land for the extension of run way at the existing Airbase.
In this pursuit, he asked the local administration to initiate the procedure to accord permission to the concerned for taking up the expansion work.
Threadbare discussion was held on making available two trolleys at Srinagar, Kargil and Jammu Airports, passenger and luggage scanning facilities at Kargil Airport, awareness about reporting time at Srinagar, Jammu and Kargil Airports for the convenience of passengers through electronic media and refreshment charges for Kargil bound passengers at Jammu and Srinagar airports. The Rs.48 crore project for the upgradation of the Kargil Airport was also discussed in detail.
It was decided in the meeting that the proposal will be moved for operation of flights from Jammu to Kargil for two days in a week. It was also decided in the meeting that with the winter season round the corner, the air service to the Kargil would be made operational from November 28 as per past practice. It was also decided that in case of bad weather the passengers will be dropped at Leh.
The Minister asked the concerned to maintain close coordination and work in unison so that passengers of Kargil, Zanaskar and Leh etc. which remain cut off due to heavy snowfall, do not face any difficulty, especially in the event of flight cancellations due to bad weather conditions.
