Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 17: With Dalai Lama giving confirmation to Buddhist monastery the Government should have no hitch in developing the Ambaran as a tourist resort of the state. The people of state in general and Jammu region especially of Akhnoor tehsil in particular will welcome the steps taken by the Government in this regard.
But in view of the Government's deliberate efforts not to give any publicity to already discovered Buddhist monasteries in Kashmir Valley the people have many apprehensions about the Government's intensions regarding developing the Buddhist monastery of Akhnoor.
Expressing their apprehensions about the Government's sincerity the people want to know about the fate of the Buddhist Monastery Kutbal in Achabal area of South Kashmir district of Anantnag which was excavated over 10 years back of Archaeology Department of J&K. The site which belongs to First century BC which reflects the richest art of the Kushan period has been buried soon after the excavation of the site by the Department.
During the excavation of the site the then Minister of state for Education late Ghulam Nabi Lone and senior officers of the Department had visited the site. It was decided to excavate the site fully for promotion of the tourism in the area sources said and the Minister had given his consent for the same.
However few days after the excavation of the site it was buried by the Department for unknown reasons, sources said, adding instead of bringing the site on the tourist map the officer who was responsible for its discovery was harassed by the Government.
Not only Kotbal but various other archeological sites of Buddhist period in Kashmir Valley dating back to second century BC and back have also been buried by the Department, sources said, adding that another monastery at Lalitpora presently called as Letpora in Pulwama district of the Valley which has beautiful motif designs has also been buried by the Department.
In addition to this no attention or research has been made on Archeology Kasabyar also in Pulwama district of South Kashmir where from five faced Mahakaleshwar Shiva was excavated some years back.
Another site where the huge archeological deposits have been found dating back to Buddhist period is at Balyar Marhama in Bijebehara tehsil of Anantnag district, sources said. But no attention has been paid to this site by the Department till date, sources added.
Such an attitude of the State Archeology Department has led to many apprehensions whether Government will be sincere towards development of Ambaran Monastery as a tourist resort. It is not the demand of the Buddhists of the state but a cross section of the people that the buried archeological sites of Buddhist period in Kashmir be excavated and their history be publicized as the younger generation wants to know about their rich cultural heritage.
