New scheme for promotion of menstrual hygiene launched

Jammu, Nov 18: New scheme for promotion of menstrual hygiene among adolescent girls (10-19) in rural areas was launched in year 2010 wherein10 districts of J&K State viz Rajouri, Poonch, Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, Udhampur Kathua of Jammu division and Baramulla, Bandipora & Kupwara of Kashmir division have been selected in the first instance.
Under this scheme initially the sanitary napkins shall be procured by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India from M/S HLL Life care and will be supplied to the selected districts of J&K state and later on to be procured by the state itself.
These sanitary napkins will be supplied under the NRHM brand name “Freedays”.
The cost of the sanitary napkin has been fixed at Rs.6/- per pack containing six napkins and shall be made available through ASHA at village level.
In order to implement the scheme for promotion of menstrual hygiene among adolescent girls (10-19 yrs) in the selected districts of J&K state – Kathua, Udhampur, Doda, Ramban, Kishtwar, Rajouri & Poonch in Jammu Division and Baramulla, Kupwara & Bandipora in Kashmir Division, one day Orientation Workshops each for Jammu Division and Kashmir Division were organized to sensitize the 10 CMOs & 55 BMOs of the respective districts.
Similarly two days training/orientation workshop of LHV and ANMs as Block training facilitators on Promotion of Menstrual Hygiene among Adolescent Age Group (10-19) yrs has began in the conference hall RIHFW Nagrota Jammu w.e.f. 14th Nov 2011 which was inaugurated by Dr Yashpal Sharma, Mission director NRHM J&K State. In his concluding address, Dr. Yashpal Sharma apprised the participants about the importance of the Menstrual Hygiene among Adolescent Age Group (10-19)
yrs at village level and further emphasized upon the participants to take keen interest in the rolling out of the programme with a object to provide the regular availability of the freedays sanitary napkins at the door steps of the adolescent girls at village level helping them to improve the menstrual hygiene.
At present the said training of ANM and LHVs are being conducted in three Batches of 19 participants in each batch for two days w.e.f. 14th Nov 2011 – 19th Nov 2011 and training of ANMs and LHVs from Rajouri, Poonch, Ramban, Doda and Kishtwar has been completed. However training for remaining Districts shall continue till 19th Nov 2011 at Jammu and similar orientation workshop for LHVs and ANMs shall be taken up at Srinagar thereafter.
Under the Programme, the trained Block Training facilitators shall organize similar one day orientation workshop for ASHAs of the respective blocks of the selected Districts who shall be entrusted with the responsibility for social promotion of the freedays sanitary napkins among adolescent girls both among school going and out of school girls at village level.
The training is being conducted under the kind supervision of the Mission director of State health Mission by Dr Robinder Khajuria Assistant Director RIS/ State Training Facilitator, Manoj Bhagat Programme Facilitator (ARSH and Menstrual Hygiene) Harjeet Rai DNO NRHM, and B.B. Sharma State NGO Co-ordinator NRHM and assisted by
Sadiq Khan and Rakesh Kumar of Mass Media Unit of the State Health Mission
