Dogra Tree Talk held in Dogri department | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Nov 18: Focusing on tree related Dogra culture P Sharma Vidyarthi in collaboration with Dogri Deptt of Jammu University kickstarted Dogra Tree Talk wherein more than 90 participants comprising of students, scholars, teachers, writers, foresters, singers, artists, historians joined hands to shed light on past rich traditions of ethnic communities in relation to flora and fauna. While welcoming tree talk enthusiasts from within and outside university, Shivdev Manhas hailed the popularity tree talk has generated within short span of ten months ,it has created a new platform where experts from diverse fields can deliberate on the contemporary sensibilities of the society. HOD Department of Environmental Sciences Anil Raina connected Jiyopota Ghat’s link to Jiyopota tree where Maharaja Gulab Singh had his Rajtilak under its shade in 1822. He underscored the need of teaching students’ local health and cultural tradition linked with native trees and herbs. He referred Mughal Emperor Akbar who got Chinars planted in Naseembagh and ordered to irrigate plants with milk. Yash Pal Sharma recalled discussions of previous tree talks held in J&K and shared that it was in this programme, we came to know that Battle of Plassey has its link to Palash ,Butea monosperma, it was one of the question in KBC in yesterday’s episode. He appealed students to carry forward the message of clean and green environment across cross section of society for a better future. Sehrish Gazal highlighted that on 19th December, 2010, Tree Talk was kickstarted from lush green surroundings of Jammu University and it traversed various locations in Jammu before it made its entry into Kashmir.Tree Talk and generated so much interest in the masses that till today, 72 tree talks stands organized, two outside J&K, one in Nehru Park at Chankyapuri,New Delhi and another in Rambagh,Amritsar recently. He disclosed that Tree Talk campaign is going to celebrate its first birth anniversary in Jammu University lawns on 19thDecember, all are invited to make it a grand success . Dogri Department students under guidance of Sunil Sharma presented tree and environmental related musical opera to disseminate the message of tree protection. Noted Dogri Poet Mangal Das Dogra,Yash Pal,Sapna Sharma and Ashok recited thought provoking tree poetry on the occasion. Shashi Pathania detailed importance of trees in Dogra traditions, Sushma Sharma highlighted role of students in environmental preservation, Taran Singh detailed concept of ancient Nakshatr Garden, Ashok Gupta discussed contribution of local environmentalist late Chaman Lal Chaman,Ravi Kant highlighted need of ground level action after holding symposia and conferences, Mangal Das Dogra highlighted importance of wild fruit trees, Sehrish Gazal talked about wild vegetables, Ranjna Kaul spoke about link of trees in the names of Billawer after Baelpatter and Sukrala after Lasooda and Gurmeet detailed contributions of his NGO SWERA in the field of afforestation and preservation of local health traditions. O P Sharma during Tree Talk deliberations focused on utility of anticancerous tree called Broken Bones Tree ( Oroxylum indicum )which is locally named as Taatra, Marinjan in Dogri,Arlu in Hindi and Shyonaka in Sanskrit highlighting its ayurvedic use in health formulation Chyawanprash and latest research inputs of its use in fighting cancer. It was told that decorative introduced African tree called Rudrpalash or Pichhkari in Hindi (Spathodea campanulata) attract birds due to its storage of sweet drink in the cup like flowers which are used by kids to squirt as part of Holi festivity,so named Pichhkari. Programme ended with cultural programme of songs, dance and music in honour of trees and forests to mark the year 2011 as International Year of Forests.
