Autonomy or AFSPA repeal? | Omar's priorities | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 18: The Rather Panel that was appointed on october 13 last year to study Justice Sageer recommendations is yet to submit its report. The Panel was supposed to submit its report within three months of its coming into being. However, the Chief Minister gave extention to the panel three months ago and that perhaps was the last time when a mention of restoration of autonomy was made. Since then Omar has extensively talked about AFSPA revocation. Justice Sageer headed one of the working groups formed by the Prime Minister in 2006. The group submitted its report early this year and National Conference considered it a victory. However, the National Conference could not celebrate the `victory' as the first phase of the on-going agitation commenced soon after. Last year's agitation changed Kashmir. Omar also changed and so did his priorities. The assurance of a full term in office by the Prime Minister notwithstanding, Omar feels insecure. The issue of rotational Chief Ministership came to fore once again. The killing of National Conference worker Haji Yusuf in Crime Branch custody oinly added to his woes. Omar, political circles believe is playing the AFSFA card to ensure a full term in the office. His campaign for revocation of AFSPA has evoked massive response. The former Deputy Prime Minister, LK Advani, the incumbent Chief of Army Staff, Defense Minister and many others have joined he chorus. And while this `high drama' is being staged on te political firmament of Jammu Kashmir, the demand for restoration of autonomy has been consigned to the cold chambers atleast for the time being. The Chief Minister, it seems was shocked by the indifference of the people viz-a-viz restoration of autonomy. The demand did not evoke support even in Kahmir not to speak of Jammu and Ladakh. The National Conference needed something else to stay in power for six years and to offer resistance to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that is gaining ground in the Valley. By seeking revocation of AFSPA, Omar thinks he has hit the nail onm its head. But the indifference of Kashmiris to his campaign must be giving sleepless nights to him. And with most of the players opposing AFSPA revocation Omar is likely to face `Na Khuda hi mila na wisaal-e-sanam' situation. |
