NC leadership perturbed over Cong stand of AFSPA
11/18/2011 11:45:21 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 18: The rigid stand taken by Defense Ministry and Army on withdrawal of Armed forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and Disturbed Area Act from some places in Kashmir Valley has perturbed the top brass of National Conference with Party patriarch and Union Minister of Renewable Energy, Dr Farooq Abdullah also joining his son and Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah asking Centre to take the Chief Minister of the state also in consultation.
According to sources the National Conference leadership has been totally perturbed after the Defense Ministry and Army outrightly rejected the suggestion of Omar Abdullah about the revocation of AFSPA. Though Omar Abdullah had succeeded in convincing some ministers in Union Cabinet including the Union Home Ministry to garner their support for revocation of AFSPA, his plans fell through after the stiff opposition made by the Defense Ministry and army.
Sources said Union Home Minister P Chidambaram was too in favour of Omar Abdullah's suggestion who is pressing hard for revocation of AFSPA from certain areas of Kashmir Valley but opposition by army and Defense Ministry has added to the worries of NC leadership which was trying to score points over its arch rival Peoples Democratic Party (PDP ).
After failure of Omar Abdullah to convince the my and Defense Ministry for withdrawal of AFSPA and DAA, Dr Abdullah came to his rescue who defended his son for demanding the AFSPA revocation. The stand of Congress leadership in the state led by its president Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz which tooth and nail opposed the withdrawal of AFSPA has been vindicated after army and Defense Ministry opposed the suggestion of Omar Abdullah.
Sources said that the rigid stand taken by Congress leadership against the withdrawal of AFSPA has also created fissures in NC-Congress alliance in the state and it Congress and not the NC which will be benefitted in both the cases. The tough stance of Congress has put NC leadership into dilemma and incase the Party takes any tough stance on AFSPA it would force Congress to extend hands of friendship to Peoples Democratic Party.
To outwit NC sources said that PDP which has already made in roads in strong bastions of NC in Valley is also keenly looking to outwit NC. So Congress which has kept its cards close to its chest will not lose any opportunity in dictating terms to NC. This stance of Congress has given sleepless nights to NC leadership, sources added.
The PDP is also calmly watching the situation and the Party has adopted the wait and watch policy instead of making public statements.
