PDP & Panthers Party gainers from erosion in Congress, BJP and NC
11/19/2011 11:16:46 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 19: If anyone had doubts about rapid erosion in the size and strength of the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir it has been removed by the announcement on the disqualification of six MLAs on charge of having defied the party whip by not voting in favour of the candidate fielded by the BJP for the Legislative Council election in April last.
During the last three years three mainstream political parties in Jammu and Kashmir, the Congress, the BJP and the National Conference, have suffered erosion as a result of factionalism and groupism. As far as the National Conference is concerned it is not groupism but its poor governance and repeated attempts by Omar Abdullah, his father Farooq Abdullah and his uncle Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal, at raising one controversy after the other.
The three-year long tussle between the PCC chief, Saif-ud-Din Soz and the union Health Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, has plagued the party with open factionalism resulting in weakening of an organisation that has since 2002 election emerged as not only the king but the Government maker also.
As a result of groupism in the party the National Conference, which is sharing power with the Congress, has not been taking the partner in power seriously. The confrontation between the loyalists and the dissidents in the Congress has assumed new dimensions in which some of the Congress leaders including ministers have been seen supporting Omar Abdullah and his policies which may contribute to added erosion in the strength of the Congress.
The way the two groups trying to indulge in leg pulling has brought the party to a new level of ridicule. Even the Congress supporters were amused to watch Azad opposing what Soz has to say about Omar Abdullah and his ideas on AFSPA. They were amazed to watch Taj Mohiudddin,a cabinet Minister, trying to give a lie to Soz's claim that the Chief Minister had not taken the Congress into confidence. Taj said he was informed about the issue by Omar Abdullah indicating that Taj not Soz represents the Congress in the state.
In comparison to the National Conference it is the party and not the individuals that matter in the Congress and the BJP. As far as the National Conference is concerned people matter more than the party. For over 40 years Sheikh Abdullah was National Conference and the National Conference was Sheikh Abdullah and since 1982 it is Farooq Abdullah leading and heading the party.
Are there any other political parties in Jammu and Kashmir that have benefitted and are likely to add to their strength from the erosion in the NC, the Congress and the BJP? Field reports say that the PDP and the Panthers Party have been the main beneficiaries from the decline in the organisatonal strength and stature of the NC, the BJP and the Congress.
Since the PDP,like the NC, is Kashmir centric it has and is inflating its grassroot support from the erosion in the National Conference and the Congress in the Kashmir valley. As far as the Panthers Party goes it has enlarged areas of its influence and is increasing the number of its supporters on the declining peoples' support to the Congress and the BJP.
Political pundits are of the opinion that the Panthers Party could cause a major dent in the BJP strength in the Jammu region if the BJP leadership failed to stem the rot that may threaten it after the ouster of seven BJP MLAs.
These pundits dish out figures in support of their claim that the PDP and the Panthers Party have enlarged areas of their influence. The PDP having made inroads in the NC bastion, especially in the Kashmir valley, and the loss in the BJP has been a gain for the Panthers Party in the Jammu region.
Another reason for the Congress to lose its shine in the Jammu region is its association and partnership with the National Conference which has done nothing to end regional discrimination and simply has been wasting its breath on questioning the irrevocability of the state's accession with India, a topic that can bleed Jammuites heart.
