Drip irrigation system to increase food-grains & fruit in Kandi areas:Mir | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Nov 20 : As part of water conservation programmes farmers and orchardists, especially in the hilly and Kandi areas, in Jammu and Kashmir were being encouraged to introduce drip irrigation system in their farms and orchards. Minister for Agriculture,G.H.Mir,said that in order to ensure increase in the farm and fruit yield in the non-irrigated belts of the state the Government has decided to given 90 per cent incentive to those farmers and orchardists who plan to install drip irrigation system. Mir explained that the centre would bear 50 per cent expenses on the drip irrigation system incentive and the state Governmentt has increased its share of the subsidy from 10 per cent to 40 per cent. He said once the farmers and the orchardists were convinced that they have to pay only 10 per cent of the amount for the drip irrigation sets they would be willing to extend irrigation facilities to their farms and orchards. In reply to a question Mir denied that the subsidy amount was being increased from 60 per cent to 90 per cent because of poor response of farmers and orchardists to the Government's water conservation programme. The Minister said that both farmers and orchardists in the kandi and non-irrigated areas are usually poor and most of them have not been able to install drip irrigation sets even when the Government provided 60 per cent subsidy on the purchase of the equipment. Mir said that once major Kandi and hilly areas were covered with drip irrigation system the state could expect increase in the fruit and food-grain production. He it would help the state to decrease the quantum of import of food-grains and increase export of fresh and dry fruit
