Would Mustafa Kamal also go Mirza Afzal Beg way? | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 20: Dr. Mustafa Kamal, senior NC leader and brother of party patron Dr. Farooq Abdullah was sacked for his statements which annoyed not only the ruling Congress allies but also the army. As spokesman of the NC the uncle of the Chief Minister made utterances which the Chief Minister accepted had come as a big embarrassment to him. It is ironical that Dr. Mustafa Kamal had to finally eat the humble pie. He said he had accepted the orders of the party high command as a faithful soldier when he resigned his position as the chief spokesman of the party and also as its additional secretary general. Dr. Kamal has ruffled many feathers both within and outside the NC. As a senior leader of the party of which he has been a part and parcel ever since he gained consciousness, Dr. Kamal, it was accepted, would have some staunch followers. Those who subscribed to his views and those who would stand by him in the hour of crisis. But for the poor Kamal not an eyelid was bated anywhere in the NC over his unceremonious exit from the chair of the party spokesman. It is not new for Dr. Kamal to issue statements those are resented by the party top brass. Yet it can be said in all fairness to the younger brother of Dr. Farooq Abdullah that he finally stands alone in the party he served for so many years. The problem faced by Dr. Mustafa Kamal is not new to the culture of the ruling NC. The tradition of the NC has been to disallow any second line of leadership and this tradition is strongly followed even today when the party is a far cry from what it was during the days of the late Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah. When Mirza Afzal Beg rose as the second most influential leader after the late Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah he was immediately cut to size. Not only was the late beg thrown out of the party but he was also badly treated many a time by the very rank and file of the NC the late Beg stood by all his life. What has recently happened to Dr. Mustafa Kamal is nothing new to the history of the NC. Many loyal members of the party have been thrown out on flimsy reasons, but since Dr. Kamal is a member of the Sheikh dynasty it is perhaps for the first time that a raw deal has been dealt out to somebody who belongs to the dynasty. Even then, the way Dr. Kamal was silenced stands out as an example of how important clinging to power becomes when the political constituency starts shrinking for those who can give up anything and everything for power. |
