CM stands in queue for his DL What about restoring sheen of judiciary? | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 20: Chief Minister won acclaim for getting his driving license renewed through common procedure. He drove straight to the RTO offi8ce and stood in a queue. According to an official statement the gesture was aimed at ascertaining the problems of the people and also implementation of Public Service Guarantee Act. The gesture shall go a long way in setting things right if the Chief Minister undertakes similar exercises to monitor working of other extensions of the government. The National Conference has been accused of being instrumental in eroding the supremacy of judiciary. The judiciary, according to senior Advocates was free during `autocratic' Dogra rule. A historic incident when Maharaja Hari Singh tendered an unconditional apology to a Traffic Magistrate for a minor mistake of Rani Tara Devi is enough to prove that judiciary worked without any pulls and pressures during those times. The Senior Advocates also narrate an incident when Sher-e-Kashmir directed a High Court Judge to follow a Halqa President of the National Conference. The High Court Judge resigned in protest. This, according to them, marked the beginning of the end of supremacy of judiciary. The trend continues to this day. The Chief Minister in his capacity as Home Minister of the state must be aware of the functioning of the intelligence sleuths. The court orders are followed in breach especially when they seek release of political prisoners. Democracy for the information of the Chief Minister cannot flourish without a free and vibrant judiciary. If Omar is interested in smooth functioning of the RTO office, he must also take measures to set an important institution right. The sooner this happens the better. The Chief Minister has inherited state's `fractured' judicial system from his grandfather and father. Omar, therefore, is duty bound to act. |
