After failure to take centre on board, Omar says his views on AFSPA are people's views | | | Early Times Report ANANTNAG, Nov 21: Finding himself isolated on the decision to revoke AFSPA, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Monday said his proposal to have the AFSPA partially revoked reflected the views and aspirations of the people. "There has been a remarkable decrease in militancy and gradual improvement in the security situation has expanded the expectation spectrum of people to receive peace dividends in all fields", Omar said here adding his initiative in this direction is as per the aspiration of the general public. Addressing a public meeting after inaugurating a power grid station at Nipora, Mir Bazar about 15 kms from here, the Chief Minister said peace is imperative for development and its benefits should percolate to the people considerably. "My endeavours in this regard are as per public aspiration. My view point for gradual revocation of AFSPA in certain parts of the State represent the public hope", he asserted and said the people want to relish the fruit of peace and tranquility along with development process. Omar Abdullah at the same public meeting said he did not want the sensitive issue of AFSPA revocation to become a matter of public debate least realizing that his statements have already converted the sensitive security related issue into a major public debate in the State. The Chief Minister challenged his political rivals saying, "I represent public view and will advocate it continuously". While the issue of real empowerment of the elected Sarpanches and Panches is still to be settled, the Chief Minister said the coalition government is committed to powerful and effective Panchayat System in the State and measures have already been initiated in this direction. "Transfer of necessary powers to the Panchayats has been affected and formulation of Panchayat Councils at Block level is in process", he elaborated. Without referring to the open bickering between the Congress and the NC, the Chief Minister said on NC-Congress relations, "These are cordial and would continue to grow further with the passage of time. Both parties are working jointly for achieving the goal of peaceful and progressive Jammu and Kashmir". The Chief Minister has been re-asserting after each public exposure of the cracks in the NC-Congress alliance that all is well with the coalition. Unfortunately, the statements made by the Congress leaders and the NC leaders are mostly aimed against each other rather than the opposition and the separatists. On the miserable electric power scenario in the State, the Chief Minister said the government has to bear over Rs. 2000 crores as losses on the supply of electricity to the consumers in the State per annum. "This grim scenario largely affects the development and puts hurdles in the process of generating employment for youth", he admitted and asked the people to cooperate with the Government by making timely payments of tariff and shunning the illegal use of electricity. |
