Make RTI peoples movement: Sufi | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Nov 22 (KNS): Asking people to make RTI Movement in J&K a peoples movement, Chief Information Commissioner G R Sufi underscored the need of creating mass awareness about this act in nook and corner of the state. Speaking at a programme organized by Islamia College of Science and Commerce Sufi said RTI Act was a great piece of legislation which has capacity to bring in a revolution with regard to ensuring transparency and accountability in functioning of the public authorities. He said Information Commission is concerned about high RTI application and photocopy fees under J&K RTI Act 2009. Sufi said private educational institutions who have been provided subsidized land by the state Government too come under the purview of RTI. “Private schools / colleges might be of this impression that they are exempted under RTI Act but if they have received some financial assistance from Government in shape of land or any other monetary benefit they too come under the purview of Right to Information Act,” the CIC added. Convener of J&K RTI Movement Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat while speaking on the occasion threw light on the section 4 (1) (b) of J&K RTI Act 2009 and appealed public authorities to make voluntary disclosure of seventeen things which has been mentioned in the State RTI Act. He also gave a brief account of some RTI success stories. Newly appointed Information Commissioner Nazir Ahmad , Mohammed Syed Shah Registrar of SIC, Prof Manzoor Ahmad Shah vice Principal Islamia College , M A Wani Joint Registrar SIC , Prof Khursheed Mahajan also spoke on the occasion . Prof Majid moderated the whole programme.
