PDP leader submits memo to DC for saving historical monuments | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Rajouri Nov 22: In view of the ongoing Heritage Week Nov 19-25, senior PDP leader Shahzad Khan along with a delegation consisting of youth of Rajouri met the Deputy Commissioner wherein they submitted a memorandum to the Governor regarding apathy and neglect shown towards the historical monuments in Rajouri district by the concerned authorities including the state government and the Archaeological Survey of India. Shahzad Khan lambasted the present government for its step motherly treatment towards the Mughal Sarais lining the Mughal Road in the twin districts of Rajouri and Poonch. Shahzad said that these are our national heritage and should be preserved and restored to their ancient glory. He said that it is regretful that despite earlier requests to the concerned department it has failed to take steps towards the conservation of the national heritage. Khan said that there are a large number of historical monuments in the district lining the historical Mughal Road. These structures are as old as around 400-450 years. The Mughal emperors used to travel through this route to reach their summer holiday destination, Kashmir. The road from Gujrat in Pakistan to Shopian was provided by inns, mosques, forts and other ancillary buildings at a distance of every 13 km for the convenience of the thousands strong royal entourage that used to accompany the Mughals including Jahangir and Shah Jahan. These structures include the sarais at Aliyabad, Ratan Pir, Thana Mandi, Saaj, Fatehpur (Nainsukh), Muradpur, Chinghus, Anayatpur, Nowshera and Rajouri Mughal Garden and Dhanindhar Fort. All of these structures are in a state of decay but for the apathetic attitude and neglect by the concerned authorities. Many of these structures are being used by the army and police departments as official as well as residential quarters. The rest are encroached upon by the local residents in connivance with the revenue authorities and used for residential as well as agricultural purposes, he said. Lambasting the Archaeological Survey of India, Khan said, “Are these structures step children that despite being 450 years old nothing is being done for their restoration, preservation and conservation. If the department can stop dismantling of a 150 year old structure then these are three times older so why is the department acting a silent and mute spectator towards this part of the state?” He has requested the central authorities to take immediate steps to preserve, conserve and list these structures among the National Heritage sites. He further said that in today’s time when we talk of sustainable development, it not only includes nature, environment and energy resources but also our historical heritage including buildings and structures. If we fail to preserve our historical structures as we have failed in preserving our natural resources what is left with us to give our future generation in legacy? Khan, warning the State Archaeology, Archives and Museum Department said that it is high time that immediate steps be taken to preserve and conserve these historical buildings and restore them to their ancient glory before we are left with rubbles in which case “We will come to streets, sit on hunger strike and even go for self immolation because it is not only our Fundamental Right but also our fundamental duty to preserve our national heritage.”
