Take control of hydro projects without raising depreciating value: KCSG
11/22/2011 11:38:01 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar Nov22: While hailing the announcement made by Chief Minister
Omar Abdullah saying ‘state will raise funds from the markets for buying
Salal and Uri power projects from NHPC, Kashmir Civil Society Group
(KCSG), has, however, reiterated its demand for taking control of the
hydroelectric power projects without raising depreciating value.
In a press statement Kashmir Civil Society Group spearheading the
campaign for return of power projects, said though the chief
minister’s statement of taking back the two power projects Salal (690
MW) and Uri (390 MW) from National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) is
appreciated but that NHPC, shall be forced to vacate the projects and
the state government should take control of the projects without any
further delay.
The members of the group which include Shakil Qalander, Bashir Assad,
Khursheed Alam, G N Naik, Ghulam Nabi Khayal, Jagmohan Singh Raina,
Zahoor Ahmad Bhat, Qurat-ul-ain, Qasim Sajad in a joint statement said
to a reply to RTI application by the corporation makes it clear that
the corporation was running the projects without any agreement with
the state.
“raising funds from the market to buy back the projects is beyond
comprehension as the corporation was plundering our resources since
decades’ the statement said adding that NHPC, shall be forced to
vacate the projects and the state government should take control of
the projects without any further delay.
Members of the group asserted that the state government does not need
to pay any compensation to the NHPC for return of Salal and Uri power
projects as the corporation does not have any legal basis to claim
ownership of these projects.
The group contested the state government’s assertion that it has to
pay NHPC Rs 2600 cores to buy back Salal (690 MW) and Uri (480 MW)
power projects.
“No records or agreement is available with them. If there are no
records available with NHPC, they are illegally operating the power
stations in state,” the group said in his statement.
“Our government is the custodian of these projects and they should
take over these projects immediately,” argued the group.
