New Delhi deflates CM's AFSPA balloon
11/23/2011 12:05:11 AM

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 22: The Chief Minister, it seems, has softened his stand on AFSPA revocation. A decision that was supposed to be taken by the State Cabinet has been deferred for the time being. Now a committee will hold parleys with New Delhi to discuss the AFSPA row.
Omar Abdullah promised AFSPA revocation the day he assumed office of the Chief Minister. He also issued a few statements last year. "AFSPA would go in my regime", Omar said. But when New Delhi directed him to behave, Omar played the typical `good boy'. He could not tell the people that AFSPA was `needed'. His Law Minister, Ali Muhammad Sagar issued a statement saying AFSPA would remain in force until needed. The issue was forgotten. However, two months ago, the issue came to fore yet again. This time Omar looked determined and defiant as well. His campaign evoked a reaction from former Prime Minister, LK Advani, the Defense Minister and the Chief of Army Staff. All opposed revocation of the legislation. Even its partial revocation has been opposed. "Army holds Jammu Kashmir for India", Advani said.
The Army's stand was equally harsh. A spokesman said revocation of AFSPA would have a serious bearing on the intelligence grid. He suggested withdrawal of army in case the law was revoked even partially.
Omar went to New Delhi and met all the persons who matter in contemporary India. Informed Sources said, Omar was once again told to behave. Being a `good boy' Omar now intends to delay the matter for some time. The idea of forming a committee for negotiating the issue with New Delhi will bail Omar out.
Kashmir, for Omar information is a sensitive issue. The developments in the conflict torn state are viewed with extreme caution in India. The gullible people, political circles believe, have been made to believe that it (Kashmir) binds India together. Withdrawing AFSPA from Jammu Kashmir, therefore, is not easy. The sooner it dawns on Omar the better.
