'Roots In Kashmir' files petition against Arundhati Roy | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Nov 22 : 'Roots In Kashmir', an organisation of displaced Kashmiri Pandits, today filed a petition against novelist and social activist Arundhati Roy for allegedly calling for an end to Indian 'occupation' of Kashmir in a speech recently at New York.
Three members of the organisation headed by convener Vir Saraf filed the petition against Ms Roy before the Jammu and Kashmir High Court through advocate Rohit Kapoor.
"Ms Roy had recently in New York in a discussion on Kashmir has made such remarks, which has hurt the entire Kashmiri Pandit community," Mr Saraf told . Ms Roy as per the published report in various newspapers and a Pakistan-based news agency on November 12 had made a case for Kashmiri people's right to self-determination before an American audience, with an impassioned call for an end to the 'brutal' Indian 'occupation' of Kashmir.
She has said the people of Kashmir have the right to self determination and right to choose who they want to be, and how they want to be.
Mr Saraf added, "Ms Roy is guilty of commission of the offence of sedition. She has also made her liable to be punished under section 505 of the IPC and RPC." He alleged that the Government of India and State of Jammu and Kashmir has not yet initiated any action against her.
The 'Roots in Kashmir' member said, "We were forced to migrate from our homes in the year 1990 due to the situation in the Valley." But, it appears that there are certain elements within the country, who are hell bent upon creating disturbances in Jammu and Kashmir for their vested interests.
"In pursuance of their vested interests, they have chosen to systematically malign the image of the nation while making speeches outside the country," the petitioner alleged.
The petitioners also demanded revocation of Ms Roy's Passport.
"She was travelling on Indian Passport issued by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India and since Ms Roy has indulged into such false propaganda against her own country, her passport should immediately be revoked and take necessary steps against her," he added.
Two other petitioners were Vijay Kumar Kashkari and Ajay Kumar Bhat. The writ petition (Public Interest Litigation) has been filed under Article 226 of Constitution of India read with Section 103 of the Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir for the issuance of appropriate writ, order of direction.
