EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar Nov23: As the chilling winters commence fast, mercury dips below normal in Kashmir valley. Met officials on Wednesday said that mercury may dip further in coming days which essentially signals the commencement of harsh winters in this Himalayan region.
However, Director Meteorology Department Sonam Lotus said that the present dry and cold spell will continue for another week and no rain or snowfall is expected till Nov 28. He said the dip in mercury has resulted due to cold and calm western disturbances. “The temperature will continue to fall and haziness will prevail during the wee hours,” Lotus added.
The cold wave has also intensified in Gulmarg skiing resort of north Kashmir and Pahalgam health resort in south Kashmir.
With the mercury dipping fast tourists- both domestic and foreigners -have finally started winding up their tours of this beautiful valley. However J&K tourism department has started activities for winter and adventure tourism and the records available with various tour and travel operators in Srinagar suggest that booking of tourists for winter and adventure tourism
from within and abroad have already started. Though Met officials rule out any snowfall in November, yet hectic activities have begun for snow skiing and other related winter sports in the world famous Gulmarg tourist spot in northern Kashmir. Senior tourism official told this correspondent that the department expects heavy influx of domestic and foreign tourists during this winter season and the department is contemplating to organize various winter sports tournaments which could attract large number of tourists and sports men from outside. ‘’we have built world class winter tourism infrastructure in Gulmarg which meets all international standards and as such we expect boom of winter tourism in coming days” the official said adding further that nature’s favour, however, is essentially required for such influx and the
department is fingers crossed.
Meanwhile state government is contemplating to utilize latest technique for up-gradation of phase 1st of Gulmarg Gondola by utilizing service of Puma French Company.
Minister for Tourism and Culture, Nawang Rigzin Jora and Minister of State for Tourism Nasir Aslam Wani held a threadbare discussion with the representatives of Puma French Ropeway Company at a meeting in presence of senior functionaries of the Tourism and Cable Car Corporation,(CCC) here today.
The French Company had also supplied the machinery and experts for phase 2nd of Gondola project at world famous Gulmarg tourist resort in the Valley.
Meanwhile people have started using traditional fire pot locally known by the name ‘kangiri’ and school going kids have started demanding immediate announcement of winter vacations which normally spread for a period of three months.
