Popularization of protected cultivation in district Poonch | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 24: Krishi Vigyan Kendra, SKUAST-J, Poonch organized two days vocational training programme on “Protected cultivation” for production of off-season vegetable production to the farmers of village Digwar and Jhallas of district Poonch. The training was organized in the farm of KVK Poonch in which 45 farmers from two villages participated. Dr. Neerja Sharma, Subject Matter Specialist, Horticulture elaborated regarding the techniques and skills of protected cultivation of vegetables to the participants. The participants were trained in raising nursery of vegetables like tomato, capsicum, brinjal and knol-khol in low tunnel green houses. Besides, how to grow direct seeded vegetables like radish and spinach in green houses was also demonstrated. The training is particularly important for the farmers of district Poonch for cultivation of off-season vegetables, keeping in view the low temperature prevailing in the district for almost 5 to 6 months in a year. A film show regarding construction of green houses and growing of different crops under protected cultivation was also organized during the training programme. Explaining importance of such training programmes, Dr. Sanjay Khar, Programme Co-ordinator emphasized that cultivation of off-seasonal vegetables shall boost economy of farmers by providing them better price and returns. Others who spoke on the occasion were Vishal Mahajan, Pawan Sharma, Sudhir Jamwal and Raju Gupta.
