“Shave your beard or face action”
11/24/2011 10:00:10 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 24: Authorities of the Delhi Public School (DPS) Athwajan, have given an 'ultimatum' to students to shave of their beards and moustache or face action, sources told Kashmir Dispatch.
The DPS, Srinagar chairman and some other staff members have reportedly asked students with beard to shave or the 'defaulters' will be suspended and their bus facility cancelled. Sources said recently one of the students was detained for a day in the school ground for not abiding these orders. The DPS authorities have issued directions that keeping beard is “against the rules of the school.”
Students pleading anonymity said: “If this direction is for all the students then why aren’t Sikhs being targeted and why is there selective targeting of Muslims in the school?” The students remarked that recently DPS Chairman came to our class and asked one of the Sikhs to shave off his beard presuming him to be a Muslim. The Sikh student was wearing a different type of turban and when that student said he was a ‘Sikh’, the reply of Chairman was “Oh...”
The chairman then took the Sikh boy outside the class and apologized to him, sources said. The students then took out protests in the school campus and chanted slogans. Sources said authorities used to force the students to sing ‘Indian’ national anthem in the morning assembly but after severe resistance from students the authorities suspended the practice.
When contacted, Vijay Dhar, the Chairman DPS refuted the allegations as “untrue” and was miffed on being called at an “inappropriate time”: “Sporting of beard is against the school rules but we have not asked or threatened anybody to shave it off.” The chairman directed to contact Principal but repeated attempts to reach the principal proved unsuccessful.
Pertinently, two years back the Supreme Court, in a case of suspension for sporting beard in Madhya Pradesh, had questioned the logic that prohibited Muslim students from sporting beards. The Supreme Court had then directed the School to reinstate the suspended student, after he refused to shave insisting it was part of his religious belief.
